When I was teaching myself to play bass, back in the paleothic era, I used a songbook called "play bass with the ventures." Boring!

I really didn't give a sh*t how to play 'red river valley!'

However I recently heard their version of Exodus and loved it.

I was influenced very much by The Ventures. As a kid "Wipeout" was one of my favorite songs. I started this forum thread to talk about instrumental rock in general.

Another classic instrumental track.

Link Wray: "Rumble"

I haven't heard anything by the Ventures in years...used to have a Ventures model Moserite double neck.

I've always liked instrumentals, I have a couple of my own on my profile. Silhouette of A Daydream and Desperately Electric Tea.

Some I've liked for a long time...

Green Onions - Booker T and the MG's I think
And the Roy Buchannan version of course I think it's better than Booker T's original

Penny For your Thoughts - Peter Frampton

In Memory of Elizabeth Reed - Allman Brothers

David Gilmour did one or two on his 1st solo album, I can't remember the names

Echoes and One of These Days from Pink Floyd's Meddle album

The Brazilian - Genesis (definitely check this one out of you haven't heard it.)

Samba Pa Ti - Santana

Just about every instrumental on Eric Johnson's "Ah Via Musicom", especially Righteous. and Zap from an earlier album...

I can't remember much else right now, but I know there are plenty more that are great...

Dick Dale .. helped make things get LOUDer! With his custom built 100 watt Fender Showman.

From Wikipedia,
Leo Fender kept giving Dale amps and Dale kept blowing them up! Till one night Leo and his right hand man Freddy T. (Freddie Tavares) went down to the Rendezvous Ballroom on the Balboa Peninsula in Balboa, California and stood in the middle of four thousand screaming and dancing Dick Dale fans, and said to Freddy, I now know what Dick Dale is trying to tell me. They went to JBLJames B. Lansing loudspeaker company and explained that they wanted a fifteen inch loudspeaker built to their specifications. The unit became famous as the 15" JBL D130F model. It made the complete package for Dale to play through and was named the Single Showman Amp. When Dale plugged his Fender Stratocaster guitar into the new Showman Amp and loudspeaker cabinet, Dale became the first person on earth to jump from the volume scale of a modest quiet guitar player (on a scale of 4) to blasting up through the volume scale to TEN! That is when Dale became the "Father of Heavy Metal" as quoted from Guitar Player magazine. Dale broke through the electronic barrier limitations of that era!

wouldn't everybody's darling Satriani be on the instrumental list? I bet he makes a good living doing nothing but instrumentals..I would trade my income for Satriani's any day of the week..

in the late fifties and early to mid sixties instrumentals were part of the top forty play list. Not a huge part but expected and appreciated.

I heard 'Telstar' the other day and though 'hot damn!'

it took me a while to warm up to surf music but my love for white Fender guitars could not be denied. 8)

Like I was telling GuitarMikeB my background is in flamenco, although I am currently dedicating my time to my instrumental rock band Mirror by the Sun (check us out on facebook www.facebook.com/mirrorbythesun if you have some time)
I think we are all trying to convey our emotions as purely as possible through our chosen instruments.
Someone that I think all rock guitarists should go see at least once is maestro Paco de Lucia.
Here is a Bulerias (one of the flamenco forms) by Paco, Joaquin Grilo on palmas, and I'm honored to say my friend Rubem Dantas on cajon.

...again all instrumental and I think it rocks!
