IVE BEEN DOIN IT FOR 8 YEARS , BUT WHEN EVER U START A NEWBAND U KNOW IT ALL GOES GOOD AND THEN ITS LIKE SOME PEOPLE JUST TURN IN TO IDIOTS AND IGNORANT C**TS AND THEY LOOSE INTEREST AND GET SCARED CUZ OH MY GOD ITS NOT A REAL JOB , AND THERES SO MANY PEOPLE DOIN IT AND I WANNA LIVE AND HAVE A GIRL AND HAVE A JOB AND EAT FOOD AND SLEEP , CUZ LIFE IS SO AWSOME

I definitely feel your pain but... Let's see...hmmmm... I have a wife, 2 kids, a dog, a whopping mortgage, car and bike loans, credit card bills, etc.... yet still find the time to put together a hard working band and actually play out almost every freakin' weekend. All those excuses are definitely a cop-out and used by those who shouldn't even carry the title of "musician"!

Neh, just kidding. If I was in a band I would bust my behind to get it going. I cannot wait to play. I have my new guitar, and soon my new amp, I am having fun.

right on crip...ive held down jobs while playing on the evenings and recording on the weekends and still manage to eat and pay rent and keep my wonderfull wife in lifestyle she is used to...

it doesnt matter if you have a job or if your flat on your ass broke if you wana play music you just do it....it dont cost much time or money if your doing it for the right reasons.

Oh boy I'm gona catch hell for this one, Ive only been playin serously for a couple of years but Ive been associated with musicians most of my life.
Seems it hard to build and keep a band because a lot of musicians are just F-in flakes. But to be honest, had same problems getting people to commit to fight teams.

I would rather have band mates who are easy to get along with, if not friends outright, who know their instrument, music, and song structure than incredible musicians who make things miserable for everybody. It's far more likely that the ones who are easy to deal with will get better musically than the ones with the great chops, who are jerks, will stop being a-holes. When you think about it, the dynamic between those making the music is just as important as the music itself. If the relationships suffer, so will the music. Don't make the music suffer.

Good points across the board. I don't recall playing with anyone that I really didn't like.(at least for very long) . It's important to have respect for your band-mates, both as people and players. I'll attempt an example of what I mean by "respect ".The only bass player I've played with in this millenium is my son Ry. Although he is very special to me , when we're "on stage" I don't consciously think of him as my son , but rather as "our Bass Player".

The problem with most bands is that everyone has a different agenda or expectation of what the band will do for them.

This is just me but if you are serious about getting a band together before you learn a bunch of music, everyone should sit down and "write on a piece of paper" what they want out of the group. If everyone is not on the same page move on to something else. WHen yo go to a job interview you are told what is expected of you and what to do. Playing in a band is really no different.

It might be good for all of us including myself to write down what we want out of playing music. It might be covers, it might be originals, it might be to pick up chicks, for me at one time it was an excuse to get out of the house and party. Every 6 monthes or so it might be good to examine what your motives are in playing music.

Good points JW. I guess like anything else worthwhile doing, it's hard because if it was easy everyone would do it. Keep up the good fight and you will get where you want to go. Good luck to all!

In the end a true musician is going to play whether he or she is in a band or not. With todays technology you dont really need a band to make music. I guess Im true cause even when life gets crazy and I have no time to spare, I will still plug in a guitar and hit a big ole open G chord and let her ring for a minute!

Back to the question: bands are like anything involving other people, its about communication.
