John Mayer has a pretty incredible ear, very good technical skills, and a really vast spectrum of stuff he can play. He just suffers from personality deficit disorder.

But man, do I want one of those Gene Simmons 'Axes.' 8) or maybe a bass with a miniature guillotine - might as well be original you know.

I don't know if slash is guitar hero-ish or not... I don't remember him being held up as a star of the band or anything.

He has one of the best Rock solos of all time though.
2:33 mark of...

And some of the best ever lead tone on Estranged and November Rain.

But he's no breathe taking virtuoso.

Over-rated... why not just say you don't like someone and why? You can't change what others think of Page, Clapton etc... they've done more for rock/blues music as Guitarists than most will ever come close to. I'm not a big fan of either of them but I'm not a fool who can't see what they've done.
I don't like Steve Vai... his music does nothing to me or for me... but I know he's a great player to others.
Some call Angus over-rated... that man has been entertaining millions of people playing 3 chords for most of his life. Can you make it any easier... 3 F'ing chords?
So what's holding everyone else back? Maybe we're all Under-rated... wasn't in the stars... miss that boat?

Underrated? Us?

Most of us write songs and play several instruments. Most of us have played for money (or could, based upon recordings) and done things.

We have square jobs now and music is a sideline. I'm honestly not sure how we should be rated.

I guess by our songs and our playing ability. But who makes the call? Many of us have played for 10 to 25 years (or more) so maybe the call is 'how good should we be?"

Ultimately I'm not sure it matters. You go back through the forum and we all seem to have projects underway, or just starting one or planning one. Doing something.

Doing something is what matters. But we all still quietly rate ourselves as to technical competency and song writing ability. 8) I'd never tell anyone my personal rating of myself for fear they'd agree with me!

I watched a couple vids with Slash in them. I didn't see much to tell the truth. Maybe he is, in fact - the One.

Plus he is fat now, plays with no shirt. and a tophat. Maybe he could form a 'super group' with Bucket Head.

Led Zeppelin has sold over 200 million albums worldwide, including 111.5 million sales in the United States. These numbers are opinion and the real
numbers are probably much higher.

Page mesmerized millions of listeners around the world. Plant melted girls
hearts and invented the classic rock singer mold.
Page was not the best writer.
Page was not the fastest player.
Page was not the best effects player.

No one guitar player in history blended these items on a commercial
level with his level of success. He was innovative and original beyond
question. His body of work is widespread and multi genre.

Pick him to pieces but numbers don't lie.

He Is GREAT in the purest sense.

Page writes amazing, eclectic, stuff. His tone has been great. He has been brutally, embarassingly sloppy live because he was liquor wasted. He is still the man and his legend is merited. Clapton is okay. But once I hear SRV I couldn't be impressed by any Clapton blues. Kurt was amazing at what he did. It changed the musical world. It was simple and literally changed the face of music. I know I'll catch flack for this but I see zero connection or resemblance between what Kurt or any of the grunge guys did and Neil Young I dislike everything Neil Young did. Not a lick, riff, chord progression, and certainly not a single vocal. Slash is great. John Mayer is a monster guitarist! Like somebody here just said he has a major ego issue. Fogerty has one of the best guitar tones EVER. Love him. Hendrix was the man. Nugent on stranglehold is a boss. Killer tone! Iommi is brutal. Josh Homme is a toneS monster.

Overrated guitarist..... hmmmm
Clapton, Kirk Hammet, Pete Townsend, Lifeson ehh, ......

Muddy Waters. I watched some concerts on netflix. Man that guy had NO business holding a guitar on stage.

I will go +1 on Clapton and Hammett
P Townsend I would say is good for what The Whos music needs not a guitar hero though by any means.
I will raise you an Ace Frehley and Ted Nugent
But hey, they ALL have more $$ than I do so who am I to say eh?

I can't count the number of times I've had to point out that money and talent have nothing to do with each other.
