JIMMY PAGE

I do love all things guitar, and I do enjoy Zeppelin's music, but there is nothing about Jimmy Page's guitar playing that I would even consider 'OK'. He's really not a good guitar player at all, hence why I believe he is over rated

cheers!

John
In my opinion..this is a "kid" who is uneducated and doesn't understand or realize the influence Jimmy page had.

Proposing that Alex Lifeson knows more about theory than Page? So laughable. Lifeson is "sort of" proficient in one genre. Not even in the top 100 rock guitarists of all time, much less comparable to Page.

Page's experience, proficiency, and knowledge is both wider and deeper than any other rock guitarist in history. No one is even close to touching his legacy, either.

There were many rock guitarists who were somewhat held back by the band or music they were playing, like Andy Summers of the Police. His parts weren't particularly brilliant or tough to play, but they were exactly what the song called for.

An "over-rated" guitarist would be someone who is admired as a "great" when they really aren't innovative, creative, or more proficient than the average guitarist.

My vote is Eric Clapton. Saw him a few times. Once had front row seats and fell asleep while he was playing.

Nothing particularly great or original about him. I respect his legacy but he does nothing I couldn't also do....and there are too many local guitarists here in Texas who are better.

Meant no disrespect to Cobain. Shotguns leave a bloody corpse.

My poorly made point was that Cobain was THE (electric) guitar force of the 90s without being a "great" guitar player by previous standards.

Page can't be judged fairly by today. So much of today would not have happened without him blazing a trail that wasn't there before him. He was a genius in so many ways.

How many bands do you know of that could do blues, metal, singer-songwriter folk, classical music, arabic, and even a little country on the same record and credibly pull that off?

Has anyone done it since?

.

Page was an excellent 'guitarist'. And not too shabby at composition. But he didn't really invent anything outside the boundaries of rock.

Cobain pioneered the "Grunge" genre. You may not like that genre, but it swept the world for a little while. Not bad for an amatuer guitarist. IMHO
...Cobain Pioneered Grunge? HMMM , I find that laughable considering that they tipped their hats (Cobain) to the god-father of grunge,Neil Young. Where one can say he 'created/started" it in the late 60s early 70s. I guess it takes a pioneering guitarits to stake claim on creating a musical genre that was already in existiance

What I find laughable is how you mistook "pioneer" to mean 'created'. I stand by my statement. Cobain Pioneered it. Neil Young created it. Fender Pioneered guitar making, but did not create it. Alan Shepard pioneered the space walk but somebody else invented it. Elvis pioneered rocknroll but Chuck berry and Little Richard basically invented it.
Anything else you wanna say about it?
...Yes I mistook "Your" post. I guess I was "flashing-back" to the day when Nirvana was fresh and all the hype surrounding them playing this "New" sound. Everyone was swooning over them. I myself am not a fan and believe them to be one of the most over-rated bands...

I don't get Kiss at all. Saw them live in the early days and they can put on a show - that's for sure. But when I listen to the songs on tape, cd or YouTube they sound awfully thin and yeah, kind of silly.

Yep, but there was many a kid doing air guitar to their music - some of those kids picked up a real guitar.
To them he was guitar hero-ish

ok so far we got Clapton and Page leading the pack.

But I think because there seems to be a lot of JIMMY PAGE fans here Clapton might actually eek out this one.

My vote is still on JIMMY PAGE, come on guitar players, cast your votes!

I see a some votes for Ace, he might actually be the underdog winner in time.

cheers!

Ironically, like Cobain, it was his writing and riffs that changed the landscape.

Alex Lifeson is 'more' over rated.
Ace Freyley - big guitar hero, but more over rated than Page.

There are several others.

hmmm.....I like Lifeson, love Rush........but yeah you got a good point man. But I still think Jimmy Page is more over rated because Alex Lifeson at least knows his music theory and can play a lot more different time/ key signatures than most guitar players.

cheers!

John

Just listened to 2112 again today for the first time in a while. I take it all back.....Alex Lifeson is actually a really good guitar player, songwriter and musician. He is at least a HUNDERD TIMES better than PAGE!

cheers!

John

dunno about 'most' for anything....but i've always thought slash is incredibly over rated. i never got what the big deal was about that guy. always sounds like just another generic garage r&r gtrst to me.

and he can lose the goofball hat too.

Frehley, Cobain, and Slash all seem like prime contenders for the title.

I thought Slash's appeal was that he looked like a characacher of Page (Page being over-rated as a guitarist in general, but indisputably a god of rock guitar), in a band that played and looked like a characacher of a rock band. I think by that point, one might even say, "rock" itself, is over-rated.

yeah...you're spot on w the characature (how DO you spell that damn word??!) take on him and his Guns-N-Poses!!!

ya know...i do get the appeal of cobain and nirvana. but Kiss??? Guns N Poses??? i NEVER got what people saw in those groups.

to my ears kiss always sounded like they were playing teeny bopper bubble gum pop music, then i read a few interviews w gene simmons where he displayed his full-on douchebaggery.....in one he dissed studio musicians calling 'em no talent wanna be's. in a followup letter to the interview motown and studio great (Bob) Babbit called him out and reminded him that he (babbit) had to go in and redo many of Simmon's shitty bass tracks.

in another he was pimping his new Gene Simmons endorsed bass. he was bragging on the fact that it only cost around $100 to make but suckers are buying 'em at $1000 and he's laughing all the way to the bank. nice.

Guns N Roses.....do i even need to go there? if slash is over rated....what can ya say about that prima donna axel rose?

Slash - hmmmm. Never heard any thing breath taking from him. And he sure is starting to look silly as he develops his aging paunch, plays with no shirt and wears that penguin hat.

But man, do I want one of those Gene Simmons 'Axes.' 8) or maybe a bass with a miniature guillotine - might as well be original you know.
