Time to stirr it up a little. I'll start....

JIMMY PAGE

I do love all things guitar, and I do enjoy Zeppelin's music, but there is nothing about Jimmy Page's guitar playing that I would even consider 'OK'. He's really not a good guitar player at all, hence why I believe he is over rated

cheers!

John

I disagree bro. Jimmy makes that guitar sound big, no matter the amp or guitar. His style and chord progressions still amaze me.

Overrated? That makes my head hurt...there's too many guitarists to begin with...

you might want to listen to "White Summer/Black Mountain Side" and then rethink your overly broad and coarse assumption..

JMZ, that kind of talk around these parts is sacrilege! Apparently you aren't trying to make friends on this site. I don't know you but I'm thinking you aren't very famous? This topic is subjective and based in opinion. The facts are Jimmy Page has written some of the most appreciated guitar parts in the last half century. He has also dare I say made more money playing music than you'll ever make doing anything. Having said that I'll just take your comment as the opinion of a finicky Jazzer!

HUGE Jimmy Page fan. :D

I have been stealing his riffs for 40 years. Chicks still swoon when they hear em.

Next???

I guess J Page wrote "White Summer/Black Mountain Side"
Don't believe he or they ever gave much credit for the riffs, lyrics, melodies that they lifted.

But Bert Jansch wrote "Black Waterside"

There is no such thing as an overrated Guitarist. You never hear people , who hate a guitarist, giving props to that guitarist. And you will always hear people who love the guitarist, paying great homage to that guitarist...

Thus, It always works out to precision consensus.

Therefore, your question was obviously a trick question...and I shall never fall for it

I was about 25 feet from Page during a show from the Song Remains the Same tour. I couldn't even pick up my guitar for a week after (of course I was also deaf in one ear for 3 days!) - he was amazing.

Over-rated guitarists - almost anyone who consistently (and only) does this speed-playing random lead non-melodic thrashing.

People have bashing Page since the 70's, and some of it IS warranted; when I saw Zeppelin Page was drunk and had slammed his hand in a train door a few days before. He takes great liberties with the songs in concert, but that's his right, he wrote the damned things. People expect to hear what they hear on the album, which is just dumb; a recording is one type of artistic statement, and a live performance is another. If they were exactly the same what would be the point? Hendrix has also been frequently cited as overrated, with similar criticisms. The thing that must be remembered is that they are both fantastic musicians and people, who are not perfect or gods.

Great guitar player and well rounded for a rock guy ... slide / acoustic / country / hard rock / blues - to say he cant play is just pure BS.

Over rated would be a guy like Ted Nugent

Guitar players are only overrated by those who rate them. And that is generally only a matter of their personal opinion and their taste in music. There is no precise method of rating skilled musicians. Every musician has a set of individual skills that others can learn, from the least skilled musician to the greatest .... all have a few good chops.

I do believe musicians can be under-rated. Alex Van Halen and Lars Ulrich for example names never pop up as some of the greats!

You just lost all credibility.

Curt Kobain is the answer you're looking for. An average rhythm guitarist who parleyed the "anti-soloist" passion of early 90s garage bands into a career, before proving his stupidity by an overdose.
