Tom whats the name of your band? Are you guys playing out? I listened to your recordings and you have a good voice. Good luck to you guys and welcome to bandmix.

J-Haley - The name left with the guy who only wanted to practice Fridays... So no name yet... He kept the name, but I kept the members... We're auditioning replacements in the next couple weeks and also may be doing some back up band work for another singer who has dates booked. Anyway, it may be as soon as end of July that we get out there...

Also - Saw that you're playing Big John's on June 8th... It's right around the corner from me so I might stop in and say hi... :)

Doesn't really matter to me, but I usually like to fish or other things on the weekend. It's really up to the consensus of the band. Sometimes it's hard to get a band to rehearse any time. That's why it's vital for everybody to rehearse on their own and then whenever they do get together, perfect the songs. IMO people should know their part(s) before ever getting together....

I'll agree with you there, Bob... But when the band's in early days, there has to be some structure that helps the members mesh and get the songs down as a group. It takes a bit to learn everyone's idiosyncrasies and create a good blend. Also, IMO, it helps to have one day that can be scheduled instead of having to repeatedly postpone or cancel due to weekend events, trips or just family time...

Too much scheduled practice makes the music stale if it is forced. Practice is good, but too much practice sometimes takes the enjoyment out of playing.

Friday nights are dreadful for traffic in Atlanta and not conducive to practice. I'll play weekend afternoons if duty calls but prefer Monday and Wed nights.

Slacker - one can get stale rehearsing too much but in the beginning there is scant choice.

But no practice can make for a lot of *WTF*s! I had a response to CL ad yesterday, first thing the guy said was that 'he was too far away for regular practices but could make it to any paying gigs'. He did include a website, and he's pretty good - and already playing with 2 bands.
I responded and told him money would not be big, at least starting out, and asked where he was. Next town to me! (too far for practices?)

ROFL I grew up in mystic, CT Mike and I used to think the same way... "...What do you mean I have to drive 45 minutes to Hartford or New Haven or Providence?" Once I left New England for points west (Utah specifically) I learn just how far far can be... LOL

Hi Tom! We rent a practice space here in Chicago and there are about 200 bands in our complex. The busiest practice days are Tuesdays and Thursdays. Most bands plays shows on the weekends. Our nights are Mondays and Wednesdays but I can see how a band can benefit by practicing on weekends where there is the least activity. That is, if you are renting a practice space. If not.... any day/night is good!

Hi J -

My philosophy is to reserve the weekends for gigs and, if there are no gigs, family time... No kids here but I do have a beautiful wife that, for some reason, prefers 'date night' to be weekends... Whether it's a gig that she attends or dinner out or just a movie at home...

Also, there's the problem of scheduling around long weekends and other members' family times... especially if they have kids...

I can see the economic advantage to getting a room on the weekend, but I'd trade that in a heartbeat for peace at home... :)

I'm with you on this Tom. You need to balance your music schedule with family time. Having a happy and stable family life lets you accomplish whatever you have your heart set on. This goes for everyone else that is in the band.

In my band, we are all in our 20's except the oldest player is 50 and he has 3 kids, mortgage, full time job and still finds time to practice and perform our shows. We know how important it is for him to have his family time so we always schedule around family functions. Good luck!
