WHEN is popular music going to improve ?!?!?!

It is mostly sleazy croaking, hormonal yowling, or drugged screeching,
that manages to sound bored and hysterical at the same time.
Or, double-tracked urban cowboys singing out of the side of their mouth
with a Texas accent.
AND the songs last, and last, and last.

We are badly in need of fresh exuberance, like the Beatles.

With the exception of the Beatles comment. Loved their writing, their performance did nothing for me.

I am a Texan who has double tracked my vocals like an urban cowboy... And I did it out of both sides of my mouth.
I'll forgive you for your rude comment , since you are Canadian and you cant help it.

Now, about the Beatles... I would love to hear your attempt at fulfilling and resolving the fresh exuberance, which you seem to have a stern handle on. Please feel free to post your samples.

If you prowl around YouTube enough you'll find some awesome music being made. Don't form your opinions from how it worked yesterday, the good ole days or what have you.

For better or worse, it's global now. In the music space that is great thing. Consider Steve Vai recording with the Netherland's orchestra or Nightwish selling literally tens of millions of CDs and yet are not widely known in the US.

It's out there brother. Stop complaining and contribute to it!

"Pop" music is designed to sell to that segment of the population that are more interested in being "cute" or "hip" than they are understanding anything let alone music.
Music to them is just background noise to their lives, and they want it to do one of two things. Maintain their fantasy, or reflect their phony drama.

I prefer to just stay the hell away from it.
There is good music all around us. For those whom are willing to search.
And capable of knowing the difference.

There's incredibly good music being created today as well as 2012 was a fantastic year in new music. If you can't find anything good, then you aren't searching hard enough, or are too settled in the past for anything to meet your expectations.

Check out some of the music posted on Bandmix profiles (like mine for example.) You might be pleasantly surprised.

Yep, there's plenty of good music being created today, but you have to dig through the crap to find it.

I agree. You just have to search a little harder for it. I stopped listening to the radio all together and now I look for new stuff through youtube, pandora and more. But yeah, don't give up just yet. I know of a ton of good bands and artists making must out there, that have had number 1 albums mind you, that radio just refuses to play.

I agree good music is still being made... the problem comes down to finding it. You use to be able to hear it on FM radio. And there were the music programs of the 70's-90's that played live performances and videos. The industry has been turned upside down and no longer has these avenues (with a few exceptions like ACL) for Artists unless they are part of the "New Industry". Bieber, GaGa, Swift, JayZ etc...
I understand where you're coming from and it's a real pain in the azz to find "new" but it's out there. There are many places to look nowadays just not in the fine little compartments we use to have.

I agree good music is still being made... the problem comes down to finding it. You use to be able to hear it on FM radio. And there were the music programs of the 70's-90's that played live performances and videos. The industry has been turned upside down and no longer has these avenues (with a few exceptions like ACL) for Artists unless they are part of the "New Industry". Bieber, GaGa, Swift, JayZ etc...

FM went downhill when corporations bought up and sterilized the radio markets.

Great music went downhill when labels stopped investing in risky unknowns and only sign bands and performers who properly fit a cookie-cutter mold.

Since the original mp3.com and the now popular indie studios came about, the mom-and-pop style avenues for new music have opened back up. There's a zillion great songs on youtube, but the only way to find decent filtered results are to ask the teens.. they've always determined what's new and hot. Maybe you could go into some teen chat forums and start asking? I dunno, just a suggestion. I rely on my nephew to fill me in. He's 18 lol.

most new artists I listen to came about from my boys tieing me up and forcing me to give a listen since I've been doing it to them most of their lives!
To name a few that you won't find performing at last nights Billbored Award show... Arctic Monkeys, Circa Survive, Black Keyes, Alabama Shakes, early KOL, The Killers, The Strokes, Jack White/White Stripes not a fan of "Muse" but I get it... to me these artist and many more haven't been turned into the pretty lil packages being sold as what's hot!

and synth is back!! I like Muse a lot, but not all of it- some of their songs are a little too gangsta for me, but I appreciate that they choose to traverse many genres.

Grouplove (even though they sound like a cookie cutter band, they do what they want, and have since the start)

some are major label (it's not all bad!) and some on indie..

What a lot of people don't realize is that hard rock and metal are just two sub-genres of the rock genre in general, which encompasses nearly all modern music since the Beatles and before, really. Today's rock is just "different", as was every great generation of rock. I see a whole lot of modern music bashing on various boards, yet few seem to realize that they just aged out of the current trends- they have become their parents. lol.

I wholly admit that 1995-2010 were probably the suckiest years rock ever saw, yet even then, there was still at least some good music out there, you just had to wade thru a LOT of crap to find it.. I'm glad to see radio finally picking up on NEW music that isn't just pop.

Of Monster and Men and The Shins I dig! I like the rootsy sounds more so than the elctronic or some of the progressive sounds but I've listened to Circa and Paramore for so long they've grown on me. Some of Yeah Yeah Yeahs as well. They remind me of some of the New York punk sounds of the 70's and 80's.
