..how many people that play guitar also list that they can play bass.
The next thing you know, you contact someone thinking they are a bass player and they want to play guitar and nothing but... lol

I have to laugh, I met a guy who wants to let me use his Sampson power amp to do a few shows and generate some extra effort and cash, so we can go do a project that he evidently has an in with on a larger scale.

So I got another drummer. (I am surrounded by drummers)
Turns out he has a really wild "lap steel" guy who is fantastic, but it's the same old crap....the hunt for Red October aka a decent bassist.

I am starting to think you just have to break down and either take any "wild man" who plays bass well enough or break down and pay a bassist even for rehearsals.

(snivel-snivel-snivel) :)

But that kind of sucks considering when I play bass for the 1 or 2 other setups, I don't get paid and I don't expect to unless we do a show.

Oh NJ/NY/PA, where are your capable and yet insane bassists of renown?

I still wanna kidnap Jeff Lutes..he's fecking great.

Is it too late to move to the "Dark Side of The Moon"? lol

People don't even included alt contact means on their profile.
(head in hands)

It's not supposed to be this hard to get people to be "heads up".

How about bass players who say they 'are guitar players'? That's the last guy I tried ...

I cant stand wading thru a bunch of profiles ... searching for bass players - and having to weed out the ones who just think they are bass players because they can play guitar.
The solution ?
No mp3 or vid ? No audition.
I have a CL ad up right now .....
Half dozen replies and only one sent a mp3 .... the rest are pretenders ... stroking themselves and wasting time
:?

Plenty of them have sample and are still MUD.

I saw your ad, Deadguitars.

How could I miss Yoda's head on the dancing bear? I knew that was you before I read a word of the ad. lol

Could be worse, I just got done being berated by some guy who thought he was the sh*t because he had 5 original tunes and no sample.

I tried to let him know nicely that he was a bit "ass-backwards" and he blew his stack.

I asked him to just give me even the "smallest taste" of what they were playing so I had some idea. "Ohhh Noooo can't do that". LOL

And then I dropped the other shoe on him, "if you have no sample and you won't let me even hear anything at all, I have no reason to even consider you for anything at all".

That's when the cussing started. lol

You'd think I was asking for a kidney.

Oh and for the record, I'd rather have a guy who was a guitarist that can play bass, instead of the convex. A reasonable guitarist playing bass with a pick isn't an awful thing, but that bassist trying to play guitar can be kind of rough to be sure.. eccchhhhh.

I was just looking at some profiles and I see some folks I'd like to talk to but there is no other contact info and they didn't pay either.
AND I need a power amp for my S215V's, so I am in SAVINGS mode.

But seriously, I have only ever met a very few bass players that were any good as guitarists, but I've met more than a few guitarists than could still play a bass albeit a more mundane representation of bass playing.

As in, they usually don't pop on slap either and that's ok with me, I don't like slapping or popping.

I'm playing bass for our annual Beatles-theme benefit in June. No popping or slapping in Beatles tunes! We're doing SOmething, If I Needed Someone and It Don't Come Easy, as well as leading eth sing along 'everyone on stage' All You Need Is Love.
I'm a guitarist playing bass, so using a pick on all but If I Needed Someone!

NO SLAPPING AND POPPING OR ELSE.

Did I tell you the story of the drummer "that was that played too much? lol

(I love this one)

"This guy was playing for a full band of 4or 5?
He was very aggressive with the drums.

So he was told to "not so heavy".

He ignored the one singer type guy on 2 separate occasions.

The next thing you know, he was still playing for them but he only had 1 drum being setup for him. It was just a lone snare drum.

And I hear he still plays with them, but he only EVER gets the 1 snare. lol)

(That's the slap heard round the world.)

Well... yes you have to be good to be a pro... but you don't have to be a pro to be good.
I've known a few starving artists that are excellent musicians and a few painters as well.
Some aren't motivated by getting by as a hired hand. Some see what they do as art. We each have our own path. Comes down to goals.
Just sayin...

Thats fine and dandy - its all the guitar guys who THINK they are bass players ...with no MP3's of their playing ... who are wasting everyone's time ...
Its not just this site , either ...

Exactly...Pro only means you get paid. Getting paid doesn't necessarily mean one is 'good'. The longer I keep doing this, more I can positively affirm that the best bands develop from the guys you meet at the bars and open mics, who step up and do something...no matter how big or small. You become pals...and the rest simply unfolds all by itself. For me, its becoming effortless to meet musicians and form up something... anything. They are all my 'freinds' first and foremost...then it gets really cool.

Funny, I became a bass player early on because we couldn't get one years ago when I played harmonica and sang. Now I play bass and sing.

I guess I'm the exception. I'm a guitarist, always have been. I picked up the bass just to lay down tracks on home recordings, and whaddya know.. I'm a natural- I don't mean to sound conceited, but I grasp the concepts of rhythm bass and have layed down bass tracks that are far more creative and apt than any guitar lines I've written.. I've found the same thing with drums..

It saddens me actually, I've always struggled with lead guitar, and the reason is pretty obvious.. I'm a rhythm man.

I do agree Cappy- most guitarists make TERRIBLE bass players, and shouldn't list it as a played instrument, especially if they aren't willing to play it full time or don't have the gear.

The only reason I haven't picked up bass full time is that I'm already in a band playing lead G.. and I don't have the gear to do bass right. Although I do post ads for fill in gigs for both guitar and bass.. I'm confident these days on both. (and will plug direct thru my midi FX into board for bass gigs)
