so, got home from our regular thursday night gig (sober as a judge w only two Piney River IPA's consumed over the course of the gig) and as usual left my vibraphone in the van w plans of schlepping it into the house this morning.

i grabbed my two gtrs cos' no way they EVER stay in the car overnight. we live out in the country, down a private drive to our house.

so....i grabbed my two gtrs, thinline tele in one hand and my '66 Guild Starfire II in the other. i locked the car up and walk down the sidewalk to the front door....put gtrs down, unlock the door and walk in after grabbing the gig bag my tele is sitting in. i lock the door and head down to our bedroom where the mrs. is waiting to hear how the gig went. we chat a while and just after we're in bed and turn the lights out i say....."ah, crap....i'm not sure if i locked the car w my vbes still in it".

she says..."you probably did, but if you didn't no biggie. no one ever comes down our drive and who'd want to deal w schlepping that vibes anyway??!!"

i was too lazy to get my a$$ outta bed at that point so i figured...fuggit.

fat forward...we finish b-feast this morning and i walk her out to her car and after opening the front door, i see my Guild Starfire sitting (in case) on our front porch!!!! OH $HIT!!!!

luckily the temp only went down to around 45 degrees overnight. i'll be waiting a while before cracking open the case.

sometimes...i just can't believe whatta bonehead i am.

anyway the pic below is actually from last nt's gig and that's the Guild in question.

so, anyone wanna lend me their gtr????

i PROMISE to take REAL good care of it and treat it like it's my own!

LOL, things happen its probably fine.

Years ago my band was playing in Memphis, we had one of those old Peavey 16 channel mixer boards the one made into a road case.

Had it stacked up on top of some gear in the back of my truck, I swung out of the place he had played hit the gas too hard and the board came out of the back passed me and slammed into a curb. I was thinking well this one is toast, was kinda old and messed up anyway. The next day I hooked it up and everything worked just fine, think we used it for another year or so after that.

Month into my first year at college (McGill University, Montreal) me and a friends are hitchhiking to my grandparents' house, about 2 hours outside the city. We've both got acoustic guitars in those cheapo fiberboard cases that everyone used back then (I dont' think they even sell them anymore).
Sprinting across a highway exit ramp to get into a better place to stick out our thumbs, my case pops open, the guitar falls face downhard onto the wet pavement and slides 15 feet to the curb!
I picked it up, threw it into the case without looking at it. Later I inspected it - broke the nut and abraded the bridge height adjustment screws and bridge pins and some dings in the binding along one edge.
I superglued the nut to last me through the school year, then had a new one installed at EU Wurlitzer (THE music store in Boston at the time), then gave it a quick once over and set up the action ($25 total!) and that same Epiphone acoustic is still my 'go to' acoustic for recording!

well, the ol' gal is just fine and dandy, playing and sounding good as always (even in my hands). i wasn't worried about any damage to the gtr and knew it'd be fine.....just didn't want to immediately open it's case to immedately reassure it of my undying love in my 30 degree hotter living room! finish checking CAN be cool, but i like "Sandy" just fine the way she is

like your gtr mike and that ol' peavey board....they DON'T make things like they used. there was alway folks back in the day who looked down and sneered on Peavey gear....and that stuff was almost always BULLETPROOF.

I've come home at 3am, unloaded all the gear into the garage and gone to bed, only to discover the next morning that I left the garage door open. Doh!!

Yea we also had these Peavey monitors, the old 1542, in fact I still have them.

We used to play these frat partys, you know the wild ones with kegs of beer, we were jamming away and these guys had these huge cups of beer and kept leaning over and spilling the beer into those monitors, back then I didnt even put the bass or guitar in the monitors, we played so damn loud on our amps, just kick, snare and vocals, well the kick drum thru the monitors would basically spray all the beer out of them, kind of made a haze around them.

I still have those speakers and all I ever did was replace the horn drivers, they still have those 15 inch black widow speakers, and that was close to 25 years ago, my son uses one and when we need extras I still carry a couple in our trailer.

I replaced them with newer Peavey monitors a few years ago, they are smaller than the old ones and do a great job.

Yea people look down on some peavey gear, but thier pa gear holds up real nice, and sounds good too.

Ive had 5-6 peavey guitar amps thru the years and cant really say anything bad about any of them, still know lots of club guys who use old Classics and Bandits.

as for me not deserving that gtr, mike....that should go w/o saying!

i believed i mentioned it before but i bought that gtr from one of my favorite musicians i've had the luck to know and play with. sandy is a very fine musician (gtr/bass/cuban tres/drums/perc) of cuban descent....and i mention she's a cubano and expose my own prejudices about cubans. pretty much to the man (or woman) ...every one i've played w.... always killed. and sandy is no exception.

sadly, though...she was a Guild-tease. after telling me she owned this gtr, she brought it to our next prct where i drooled all over it. first looking at it and then more buckets upon playing it.
she had it for awhile and it wasn't getting it for her anymore. so immediately, i asked her to sell it to me. well, she wasn't THAT sure about letting it go. long story a little shorter....she soon reconsidered and sold it to me just before she moved outta town.

i miss playing with her and her super cool personality. did i mention she was also a cutie?

so, this gtr has some special attatchment and meaning for me. (thank god i was able to get most of drool off it)

some damn fine imagery there. john! yeah, i totally get that picture of each "WHAP!" of the drivers ejaculating little eruptions beer out!

absotively. a guy i play with still uses his 30 something yr old powered mixer (600?) and that thing is a tank.

yeah, and steelers still use 'em, swear by 'em, and would have nothing else.

i had a tweed classic 30 for awhile and it had some great snarky tone. it was pretty much a one trick pony though and i sold it ...but now, i do wish i still had it. (yeah, now who didn't see THAT one comin'?)

I've also left guitars at venues after a gig, luckily I've always retrieved them. This is why we need roadies, I just want to plug in and play! Let someone else move the crap.

You know the folks living around you are honest when your stuff is still there. Or the bad guys timing was in your favor! I think every musician that's been doing this for awhile has made that mistake. I always check and double check. most gigs we play are over an hour away. By the time I get home put the trailer in the garage and unload guitars out of the truck, put everything away its 4am. We have booked gigs down here on my side of town.

I really don't want the 9p-2a gigs anymore. I'll leave them for the young bucks. Last time I came home at 3am with a truck full of gear I just threw a tarp over it and went to bed. The next day I dragged my sorry azz out about noon and unloaded.

I keep guitars and sensitive electronics in the cab but everything else camped out for the night. My property is gated with dogs so no worries about stuff disappearing though.

My day job is all about getting my crew going early in the mornings. In my 20s I could work all day and gig til 3am easy. Anymore I am good til about midnight. After that I turn into a pumpkin pretty quickly and it will wreck me for several days.
