Ok, after a rather nasty turn of events, I think I isolated the issue(s) and rectified the situation.

I will say one thing, unequivocally speaking and that is if you utilize a modem that never turns off, change it out for a variety that you can turn off when you aren't using it or suffer the consequences.

(Very intuitive Mike, WiFi is def not as secure as reps would lead you to believe. Kind of pisses me off considering I don't utilize WiFi at any time for any reason for just such a possibility.)

I do notice some indicators that tell me that my current issue was associated to this site but part of it was definitely my fault for being naive and allowing myself to think that my isp would be smart enough to remove avenues for easy penetration.

Now I should be okay again, but I'll be more proactive this time and I now know what to look for and understand how they got in. Hopefully I removed the avenue(s) for access and I can control the situation more easily else I WILL remove the internet as I refuse to go through this process again.

Otherwise relax folks, I am not dying...I was just going to take a powder.
For every person that thinks it would be bad thing for me to go, I am quite sure there would be 3 that would have a glass of champagne to celebrate. (one even sent me email..lol)

One word: Firewall

People think that the free MS stuff will keep them from virus and other intrusions, but that's why you apay for McAfee or Norton - Firewall protection and updates.

I am no computer expert but if something like this happens again, couldn't you just go into safe mode and revert back to a previous date before you computer was compromised?

Thankfully I have not had to deal with these issues since i got a mac computer... I still have virus protection, but so far I haven't needed it in the past 3 years.

Hopefully this incident will help prepare you incase it ever happens again.
Good Luck

No actually it had a lot to do with a modem that stays on all the time and wiFi access.

If you ever leave anything on all the time, it's an open invitation to be hacked. I don't care what you run, you can get through the firewall, circumvent the browser and more or less directly into your machine.

I was fortunate that I unplug the Ethernet cable from my machine when not in use, but they still managed to gain access to my modem because it was an external that was to stay active at all times, but I zapped that in the ass as of this am.

I don't care what the reasoning is, if I can't turn it off while not in use, I'll simply opt out and find a new ISP and that's basically what I told them.

i.e. They showed up on my doorstep at 0700.

"I am not fond of educating my ISP when they should be educating me".

One more of these instances and Buh-Bye Internet. I have enough to do and plenty to keep me occupied that I won't miss the net for even a second.

PS: Safe mode would only help if you had a virus. I had no virus. They couldn't even access my machine as my Ethernet cable was not attached and I don't use WiFi, but they tried to logon to a few networks posing as my machine and they attempted to gain access to one of my email accounts.

PRETTY FING SCARY IF YOU ASK ME.

I just started banner ads on my own website (Levitynews.com). It would truly suck if one or more were infected some way. Highly doubtful, but the hackers are one step ahead, or so it seems...

Scotty, forgive me, but it sounds like you are using some pretty ancient tech there. (Please tell me you aren't on Dial-up LOL! ).

Get McAfee or Norton and be done with it. IMHO 8)

Nicht!

It's just an external modem that wants to be on at all times so it can be used for phone calls etc. The breach was via WiFi.

Ich liebe dich uber alles, doofie.. lol

If you hijacked somebody's WIFI ...well...then you get what you don't pay for...

Invest in a Cisco Router or similar and set yourself up with a WPA2 secure connection... Then you can leave it on 24/7 . When you set up the key, make it a pass-phrase...Like the gettysberg address or something ... It will take months for anybody to hack it ...and by then, they might actually have found employment somewhere and just give up.

...

It was MY external modem and I don't even use WiFi, but it was part of the external modem. (Are you any relation to Clifford?)(Send me a pm and I'll explain it fully to you if you need me to.)

Next you going to tell me that you never heard of an external modem that incorporates WiFi ? You are killing me, guy!

The modem was a gimme from the ISP and the only reason I used it is because they told me I had no other option, well until this happened.

PS I don't hack/hijack/use pirated software or any derivation thereof.
No need to. Being poor isn't an excuse to be a criminal, you just think it is.

LOl Scotty, I know what an external modem is... (Its a 50 caliber mount, on the roof of the house that mows down all of dem...)

My ISP is Time Warner...They gave me a modem... I piggy backed a Cisco wifi on it... Now I can tell you about it, while I sit in the back patio on the other side of the house, without dragging cable through each door... :D

I wasnt trying to imply you as being a criminal... But I know a lot of guys who need to be told...
YOu have been having a rough week...Its time for a beer :)
