I hold neutral on this one. I must say it appears, and I did not know this, that the IRA was fighting in defense of its own against an overly controlling British goverment (It reminds me of Gandhi's "passive aggression" against Britain to force them to release India from their reign). On the contrary, I think the way the IRA went about it was too extreme. You do not take the lives of innocents in order to solve your issues, nor is killing high staking political leaders, such as Prime Ministers, going to solve anything. These are the people who will get you what you want, killing them usually only makes matters worse.

It is a very controversial subject, and I choose no side of the fence really. However, I am completely against any aspects of terror that involve insane violence and immolation. Extremists have no where in this world. The only way to get peace is to go about it rationally and not through means of chaotic destruction. Look how the United States beat Japan, we bombed them with atomic bombs. Multiple thousands of injuries later, they gave up. It was barbaric and afflicated damage upon civilians of whom were not part of the war. This is where all countries seem to screw up, attacking the innocents.



I.A., I see your point. But I must side with RhythmMan on the fact that I think we are going a bit overboard with the political discussions on this board. Let us remember this is a board for musicians and music based discussions, and try and tone down these political postings. Besides the fact that we are killing each other over these topics.

Im in agreement with GA, Besides us good ol boys here in the US of A may need all the Irish help we can get to stay free. I will for my part try to focus more on the music oriented posts. may be difficult as for my generation Rock is rooted in revolution. and for a little historical perspective on the A bombs on Japan. More people died in the fire bombing of the japanese capital region than were killed by the nukes. And Stalin murdered more Jews than Hitler. Wont here that in school.

I have to come clean and admit I have always supported the Irish Republic. The green for me, baby! I could write a long post about why I do, involving all sorts of history about William of Orange and all that, but let me distill it down to say that England needs to learn to play in her own yard. The days of Hail Britannia, the great empire, are gone. Let the Irish run Ireland.

you hear alot of goofy things in school, and in other places. While Stalin certainly has a lot of blood on his hands, he did not murder more if you use the meaning of the word murder - "intentionally killed". The millions who died under Stalin, like Mao, largely died from disastrous agricultural policies (they were gradually starved to death). The Ukraine lost a huge number of their people over this, and Mao's agri-reform did the same in large swaths of China. Hitler, on the other hand, was the only one out of the three that led a systematic extermination of people based on their races or beliefs.

So, they aint exactly the same.

i sorry g.a. if im to political but i put up this post because you said you didnt know much about the troubles and i thought "why dont i show you" its an exchange of culture...as such...today you know more about ireland then you did yesterday...that can only be a good thing...

and i feel like we should be able to talk about everything and anything on the boards....dont get me wrong im here because of music just like most here its what i do and what i live for but just because your in a band it doesnt mean you shouldnt know about other things than music.. i dont sit around with my band friends taliking "music" non stop..it would drive me nuts......
there is a time and a place for everything and we need to mix it up a little
every now and again...you can only have so many "best guitar...best singer..." type treads before it gets old...if ya get me...if nothing else at least i get a reaction from people...not all good i know but im not here to piss people off...

i love the back and forth on the boards and i never take what anyone says to me to heart....people get worked up(im looking in your direction graig ) but i know everybody who adds to the boards are all good people who i respect as not only musicians but as human beings...even the christians it all adds to the mix....i mean if i never moved to the states you never would have asked....."are drummers musicians????"

I.A., I know where you are coming from man. I thank you also for posting it so I have a better understanding. At least I did learn something else from it, that is a very good thing. It is a music forum and we should try and keep it at that, but I agree with the concept that sometimes it becomes a bit over exaggerated. I guess this is general chat, but if we start flooding the music site with political debates then we will start to lose part of the reason we come here and others do.

I like debates, sometimes they get out of hand and are hard to handle, but I like them. I see where you are coming from, and you need not apologize, no reason to. You have done nothing wrong, I was just saying we need to kind of keep this place music oriented. Though once in a while it is fun to throw some other stuff into the mix. I guess the only thing that could be done is adding a separate portion to the site or designating general chat as a place to talk about anything - that would bring some balance I suppose.

I admit that was a lesson for me about Ireland, I never really quite understood what happened over there. Now I have a better idea and I thank you for posting that video.

I think the thing is I figure if politics or arguments are going to arise they are going to arise in music subjects. We have had wars over religion in the Christian music scheme already, and political wars everywhere. I do not know if new members who come here now will think this is a good thing because it shows diversity in subjects, or it is a bad thing because it takes away the purpose of the board in the first place. This is a very tricky subject.

Sorry if I am ranting and some things are out of place, I tend to do that.

We are all friends here and have deep respect for one another, even if there is an occasional battle. What is important, and I press this fact, is that we all get along and hold a mature level of reaction to each others statements. It is when we overreact or become belligerent that problems transpire. I do not know everyones educational background on here, but I believe we all have been educated, either via college or through life, in the fact that matters can be handled in an academic manner as opposed to an irrational one - I am sure all of you will concur with that philosophy.

Now it is back to Chemistry for me, I have a lot of studying to do for that GED, lol. RhythmMan reminded me the other day and I was like "He is right, I need to get back on track here, I have slacked off enough." Thus I am studying harder lately.

I'm in agreement with the Irishman, we should talk: I make a point that when another menber gets my attention by something he said or a position he takes, to go to his site and hear his music. Gives me perspective that were all human. Because I am a man of great passion and little self control it would be very hard for me to hear what you have to say in person.

Music is an outgrowth of our humanity. It brings us together, but never keeps us from realizing that we are human and are affected by the issues of the day. I guess that's why I resist this notion of never talking about anything except music. As long as we don't get bogged down in flame wars about them, what is the harm in talking about the issues involving us in life on planet earth?

Aint that the truth. You know what cracks me up? When so many Americans look down their noses at people fighting for their homes, their way of life, their nation, and calling them "terrorists" with nary a word about how they would react if their homes and freedom were yanked from them. What a privileged position, isn't it.

If my land were invaded tomorrow, I would become a "terrorist" of this type without even a nano-second of hesitation.
