LOL you got me mixed up with someone else.. I despise country. You may have seen me mention country in a different discussion (the online contest) where I remark that the lyrics resemble country, but no, I don't think I've ever used the words country music in a positive sentence.

back to the topic:

A poser is someone who thinks they can get by on "looking the part" without all the work it takes to truly be an artist.

When I retired from being a professional musician in 1990, I had been a "hobbyist" locksmith for several years as a part-time job...and decided to go full-time professionally into locksmithing.

During those years I was just as good a musician as I had ever been but was no longer a professional musician because it wasn't my main source of income.

Steely Dan did play live because I've seen concert footage. But either way, their main source of income was their music.

I came out of musical retirement in 2001, but it took 3 years for music to again become my main source of income. I was a professional musician again when I could no longer afford to be a locksmith.

There is no shame in saying that you do music as a hobby. That is more about financial status and has no bearing on your talent or ability, so it has no bearing whatsoever on your value as a musician.

I would hope that grown men with families would make taking care of them their first priority and pursue the dream as a hobby until the right time presents itself, if it ever does.

I must be thick headed because I think of David Lee Roth as a poser even though he could be considered to be a "full-time" musician".. a pro would be somebody peddling music instruments at the local music store..am I getting across?... :P

I hated Roth's voice...a squeeky coyote...but he did make his living on music therefore was a pro musician. Now he's a pro talk-show host in NYC, right?

If you make your living selling instruments, you are a professional salesman.

Excellent post Yod...I chose to keep music as my hobby after trying to be a pro in the early 80's. We worked all the time but never made that much money. I decided to go back to school and keep music as a hobby and I'm so glad I did. Raising a family and affording all the toys I like is expensive!

Dane, someone selling musical instruments is a professional salesman, not a professional musician. David Lee Roth is just a professional jackass!
