Tell Me about it... This instrument is amazing... I'm still trying to figure out how to tune this... What's really interesting is how that eerie resonance we associate to the Sitar relies heavily on the entire bank of strings to be properly tuned, in the correct register of their respective scales... If they are not proper, the effects are diminished.

Also finding out that there are apposing methods of scales, depending on what religion you are...HA HA! There are some pragmatics as well.. For example: Our Open E tuning is too slack for sitar open keys... Sitars are generally tuned , either in C# or D.
I'm still not sure how string order is defined... (and I'm only talking about the main strings.)

I will figure this bad boy out...only a matter of time...

I heard that they got fed up trying to teach Westerners how to properly tune sitars in the traditional style.
So, they use Western notation now.

@GuitarMikeB: Those things that look like pickups are the 2 bridges, large one for the main strings, the small one for the tarab strings (resonant strings)

Tarab is Arabic for musical ecstasy.

Yes! That's Denny Dias playing a Coral Electric Sitar ... which is strung like a regular 6 string guitar but has a sitar type bridge and some tarab strings. More of an elaborate sound effect for guitar than a sitar.

A sitar is set-up, strung and played differently than a guitar, designed especially for a melodic style of music that is centered around a drone tone.

The sitar also features movable frets, and that opens up a whole other dimension ... just intonation compared to equal temperament.

Yes, Each fret is adjustable.... (ANd here I thought my Gretch's floating bridge was a step out of conventional boxes) ... Each fret is positioned and then tied down with Gold colored thread. Its daunting... I have no idea how I would repair it if one of them came off... This sitar has 7 main strings and 13 "sympathetic" strings. I'm still not clear on the scale. I will savor the moments of examining, learning and mastering these simple tasks... and when I get that done right, I already have some musical ideas...
