so, new lineup for PLANET JAZZ and we're on the hunt to try to land some gigs at local restaurants during the week (and maybe weekends too if the $ is happening.

we got together this afternoon. put my wife on iPhone camera duty and stumbled thru a few tunes.

no fancy production, editing, and not NEARLY enough time to talk about arrangements or how to get outta tunes.

here's "Georgia" w me on gtr (PEERLESS Monarch direct into 65' Deluxe RI)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zg3jVMSh ... e=youtu.be

and "Song For My Father" w vibraphone

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u80u7Zo5nLA

i suspect we'll be getting together again to see if we can improve things.

....and no, i WON'T be quitting my day gig as a bass player!

so PLANETGUY what is different about PLANET JAZZ?..what member has been replaced? was it a mutual thing, or somebody forced out? or is it an addition to the core members?

the big diff is that instead of me playing bass as i normally do...like here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jiYEFNijKto

we have bill roe taking care of that. like myself, bill's a journeyman musician (read: whore for hire).

he's been helping us out on gigs where we need to expand beyond our usual trio format so he's pretty familiar w the material. it helps that he's also a fine player and soloist and just one of my all time favorite people to be around.

so, the usual lineup for the past 15 or so yrs has been me on bass, monte our drummer, and doc on horns/gtr/keys.

doc's a retired MD and he and his wife do the "midwest snowbird thing"...they're up in WI may thru nov/dec and then come down to MO to winter here. so...he's only avail for half the year.

previously for when doc's been gone we'd been playing w another sax player but musically that wasn't really getting it. if you're playing sax w nothing but bass/drums behind you....you damn well better have your $hit seriously together because EVERYTHING is super exposed.

anyway...one of the big reasons for going w this lineup is so i have a (semi) regular gig playing gtr and vibes. i'll miss playing bass on this stuff and playing bass w monte on drums is one of my true joys but i'll still get to do that when doc's back in town.

thanks for checking the tunes.

Vibes always remind me of girl from epanema, excuse the spelin.
Could be more fluid on guitar changes when it is lead instrument.
Would watch clock with songs too. Would always look for opportunity
within songs to highlite or show-off talents of each instrument with solo.
Without singer that is probably necessary. Wish I was closer.
Seems like a mature night club kinda sound. Don't know if there is a market
in your area. Maybe back ground dinner music. A celo and fiddle, I mean
violin would be good addition. Lot of talent there.

no worries. i ain't writin' no tickets for spelling. "Girl From Ipanema"....OUCH! well, i actually think that IS a great tune but it is often equated w schlocky lounge music.....or elevator music...or cruise ship tunage. of course as you likely know... the classic version w Getz and Gilberto(s) has no vibes anywhere in sight. on the whole classic album.

yeah...well, ALL my $hit could "be more fluid" and that'd be just fine and dandy by me.
do you mean more fluid in outlining the changes? i've got to keep things a little angular because i'm NOT going for a "smooth jazz" elevator/hot tub music vibe. as far as slop....well, that's another story entirely.

Would watch clock with songs too.

actually, we were watching it big time on both those songs. "Georgia" tips in at 4:03. The form is pretty long thru the AABA structure. we played thru the page exactly twice...once with the head (melody) and once more thru the page w me soloing only over the AAB then head for the last A section. we didn't feel we could/should shorten it more than that.

"Song For My Father" clocks in at 4:46. neither are very long compared to how we stretch out playing them live...they only SEEM to go on forever!

of course. bassist didn't feel comfy soloing on "GA" but he takes a solo on the other tune "Song For My Father". and ....as you point out....gotta watch the song length for demo stuff like this.....too many solos equals too long a song for this purpose.

on the other tunes we recorded everyone solos... the melody gets passed back and forth between myself and the bassist....we all trade fours, etc

exactly what we're going for. as for a mkt... well, we're trying to open up some gigs at fancier dinner places that don't have music. that's why the laid back vibe and why we're set up so close together. for bar gigs w PLANET we have vocal stuff and stuff w more balls.

A celo and fiddle, I mean
violin would be good addition.

i haven't heard too many cellists that can really make that instrument work in straight ahead and hard bop music. violin....well that's one i hear more on swing type stuff/gypsy jazz and not so much here. plus we still have our sax guy around that'd be joining us on a lot of gigs if the money and room are there.

Lot of talent there.

thanks klug for the compliment, view, and reply.

I just love the vibes player that was known as Viktor Feldman.. I really dig his playing on, " Livin' On The Fault Line " by Doobie Brothers,, it is so hard to believe the Doobie Brothers were also decent jazz musicians in a sense.. Livin' On The Fault Line is a great album..

I liked it.

Sounds like something sad and it's raining.

(kill the drummer and that snare rattling is annoying as hell) lol

Cool beans, yes bartender I want another shot of whiskey and bring me a draft beer as well. lol

I think if you get caught having that much fun on a gig ... you will get your license to play bass revoked!

That's a very nice sounding group that should have no trouble finding a good gig.

... but a cello could spice things up , like these post-boppers here

That music is interesting Vinny, but don't you think it's kind of busy?

I'd like it more if it was a little slower with more feeling, but that's just me.
