Hi peeps, this is generally directed at keys players who sometimes wander by. Lately I've been rehearsing my ass off on the keys amongst other things. I'm starting to get a pain in the knuckle on the middle finger, (right hand). Boy does this hurt when it starts.... !
It's so bad I cannot pick anything up with the hand, let alone play the keys sometimes.
Typing on this keyboard also doesn't help I know.

I just wondered if this is common or not please?

Chippy Im a guitarist, but the other night I went into practice some scales and wierd chords, and my thumb had this shot of pain thru it like Ive never felt before. I tryed to play thru it, but went outside for a smoke break and came back in and it was gone.

I have problems with joint aches in my ankles, knees and hips, and one of my shoulders, Im sure thats from years of MX racing and hitting the ground, but its the first time Ive felt something in my hands, Im hopeing it never happens when Im doing a gig.

No advice, but I can relate to what you are talking about.

Chippy - welcome to the world of the aging musician! Overdoing anything can have that effect. Rheumatoid arthritus run in your family?

If it's sudden, rule out common conditions such as arthritis.. which tends to take root slowly.

Could be a strained muscle / tendon.. equal to a pull in leg or arm, but in the actual hand. I've done that before with training too hard on guitar, or especially once when I went on a writing / recording binge for literally 3 weeks of nonstop playing and rehearsing and recording parts over and over..

Other than that, I currently have carpal in my right hand, and had it in my left, which required surgery (couldn't get both done at same time). Unfortunately, even with health insurance today, it's near $10k to get the surgery (whereas it was a $200 co-pay only 3 years ago, THANKS OBAMA, you RAT).

But wanted to point out that you should consider tendonitis, CT, and about 10 other possibilities.. many of which come on strong the way you described. The only real way to tell is to get some diagnostics done. Worst thing you can do is self-diagnose and try to treat the wrong problem. All of the above have different types of treatments, and what works for one can make the other worse.

I'm going with muscle strain, it feels like arthritis but eventually goes away.

I did some really ugly work not too long ago and I get similar pains in my hands now, but if you can let them rest a little that pain will go away.

I soak them in Magnesium Sulfate or Epsom Salts and they're better, but if you don't let them rest a little that pain will come back quickly.

If you can rest them for say 6 months, you are good to go but who actually gets to rest for 6 months? No one I know...

Try not to play with so much force. I know guys who practice their material slowly because they say it's not so hard on their hands.

They sell cloth gloves at any drug store. Buy a pair, lotion up heavily before bed, and put them on. The cloth absorbs enough of the excess lotion to keep moist throughout the night.

Also one of those callous sanders or whatever they call them and sand it down a bit.. they also help smooth it out.

Thanks Kramer, I still have my old Micheal Jackson gloves, figured they would come in handy, I guess I can use that same sander I use on the corns on my feet!

the mandolinists on BM might be familiar w a common and trying condition know as "trigger finger".

it occurs on the left (fretting) hand index finger. i think it's largely due to having a grown up sized hand playing a neck that most 5th graders would have no trouble getting their hand around.

w me it when it occurs....it most often feels like an acute stabbing pain that continues as you use your finger throughout the day.

cont. pain = the range of motion you subject it to.

and other times it's actually felt like a blood vessel exploding in the 2nd joint from the fingertip. resulting in the amazing expanding and one of kind exploding sausage finger.

i guess it's possible some gtrsts exp this too? so far i haven't exp it on anything but mando.

Hah.. you and me both.

Last year I was diagnosed with eczema of the fingers/hands.. it's been a nightmare.. skin just dries up no matter how often I lotion, then randomly splits open when stretched (and OMG it is the most painful thing you could imagine).. I wear those gloves frequently with cetaphil or steroid cream, always have band-aids and neosporin.. healing takes forever.. part of the condition.

I'm looking towards organic foods to beat it.. it's yet just another autoimmune disease/condition caused by our systems being in perpetual toxic shock.

Another story for another day :/

I just cut my thumb to boot, I did this a few years ago in the kitchen, just wasn't watching. Sharp knives and all that. Thanks for the replies, gone off now. Probably due to the placebo of cutting my thumb!

Next time I'll use the Machette.
