Ouch! Easy there Pat. I'm no Kenny G fan but there is simply no accounting for taste. I studied jazz guitar for 4 years in College and got exposed to a lot of great music. Charlie Christian, Wes Montgomery, Joe Pass, Django, Charlie Byrd all had some great stuff and my jazz on vinyl collection is pretty deep as well.

I bought 2 Pat Metheny albums back in the 70s cause everyone said what a great player you were... Meh. I don't really dig your work man. I'm sure you had excellent training and your technique is fab but the compositions just lack vibe and groove. If I want to suck the energy out of a roaring party all I have to do is put on Pat Metheny and it works like magic. Everybody goes home and I can get some sleep. Thanks for that.

As for KG being a no talent scoundrel? Maybe yes, maybe no but for you to point it out in interviews is simply bad form by a "respected" jazz musician. Everybody does their music in their own way. Some of it sells and some doesn't. A lot of people are pretty fond of KG or he wouldn't be selling it by the container-ship load so who are you to disrespect fans musical choices by essentially calling them ignorant and stupid?

And no, I don't own any KG. :D

Johhny, you ever check out any grant green? he has a slew of records he recorded on Blue Note and was pretty much their "house gtrst". he played on tons of blue note sessions.

he was a really good and interesting player, but boy...his tone is definitely an acquired taste. for the record...i do like it....but it did take me some time to come around to it!

Yikes... what is that...to publically do that to another Musician.

How do I feel about that? hmmm...

Lets just say that I admit I know nothing about Jazz...So Mehany's talents are lost on me for sure... But now, it will be a cold day in hell, before i actually ever pay for 'his' music... I mean, I wouldnt want to be accused of being construed as a fan who hangs with an expert on "stupid" music.

Damn, its just plain distasteful...

I'm sure I have heard his stuff but I never dug in very deep. Looks like his std axe is a 335 w/ p90s. He's a player for sure.

actually a 330!

i've always jonesed for one of those old '60's 330's. i've played probably half a dozen or so and they are soooooooo resonant it's just ridiculous.....almost as ridiculous as the prices they fetch!

Ok After listening to Methany I confess he has the chops... But I still disagree about the public flogging...

Karma has a nasty habit of paying us back. Methany will have his bolt of lightening someday, prolly when it is most inopportune...

That's why...as a personal rule of thumb, I will never "publically" defile or degrade other people (BM doesn't count :) ) , no matter how badly I think they they suck... BUT...on the same token, you wont catch me raving props in public, either.

Its a matter of decorum and professional pedigree...I think ...

I've never been a big fan of Metheny's music, but like him better after seeing this video  ... even though it is ultimately probably pointless since people who love Kenny G don't really want to hear jazz anyway, but the idea of it makes them feel sophisticated to be able to say that they are into "jazz".

So many people cannot understand it, Jazz seems to have almost become like a foreign music in it's own land.

yeah...been hip to that video for awhile. kinda interesting on a few levels.

(for those playing along at home...it's kenny burrell on left, barney kessel middle, grant green on right).

points of interest:

grant green is actually playing a lot more "burning" than usual for him. nuthin' wrong w anything he plays here but he usually plays w more space.

kessell is actually pretty laid back for him! and i still maintain that when they make The Barney Kessell Story...they've GOTTA get jeff goldblum to play him!

kenny is just plain ol' hard swing bluesified kenny burrell. prolly my all time fave gtrst.

ok, they start "trading fours" after awhile. grant goes first and when it's kessel's turn he's spaced it out and missed his entrance.....he nods to grant to continue w another four.

then, when kessell takes his turn(s) he really plays nothing that has anything to do w the previous four bars! points off.

i do like how kessell is checking out kenny during kb's solo and actually almost cracks up (in approval) cos' he's so obviously digging it.

I'm not sure if this is what you meant, but to me,
it looks like Barney is enjoying Kenny's solo so much that he forgot all about Grant (who took the 1st solo, so it seems like it should be Grant's turn to start the fours) .. who appears to have started playing at 5:02 and demures at 5:05 when Barney steps on him out of turn. Then he starts at 5:12 when Barney wakes up! All great guitarists though!
