I disagree Mike.
As a father of 4, and grandfather, I know unequivocally that no two individuals even direct blood relations are alike.

You can lead a horse to water as it were.
My father was a great role model. To say he was responsible for my drug abuse alcoholism and fornication would be a gross injustice.

Perhaps there was too little discipline? Too much?

I have come to believe universally that only the actor is responsible for action.
I don't even have the word "fault" in my vocabulary unless I'm discussing geophysics . . . respectability . . . personal responsibility . . . and being held socially accountable for same . . . that is the only sane approach.

George, If we should only credit our failures to ourselves, then shouldn't we also credit our virtues, only to ourselves? However, we are taught tthat we are what we are and we should give thanks to our father for that, which we are, do, see, and so on...

There is that saying "Spare the rod, spoil the child.." (I forget which chapter that's from)

Granted, some kids, we cant do anything for them... But as parents, aren't the fundamental behaviors of young children are our first and foremost responsibility...? Its not enough to teach them right and wrong...Sometime we simply have to enforce a pattern

In bullying, there just simply is no excuse to 'allow' such a pattern to occur. My son was disrepetful to his Grand mother one time...He was 16... (he already knew better, but decidded he was above everyone else). I had to and I did put the fear of the universe into him. He never was disrespectful again.

Stupid question, but where were the teachers?? I thought all recess and playground activity was supposed to be supervised by at least one adult?!?

Especially in Philly! It's like no 13 year girls have ever been snatched off a playground in Philly.. wtf?

To agree with what some others said- yeah, this isn't bullying, it was aggrivated assault that ended up being murder. The paper is trying to create a backstory from thin air. Bullying would suggest a pattern of beatings or intimidation, which I don't recall being mentioned in the article.

And yes, bullying is a serious problem, not just in schools. I've seen corporate bullying that was far worse mentally than anything I saw in grade school. It's worse in the corporate atmosphere in the sense that it's being perpetuated and endorsed by adults, many in positions of power, and if the 'victim' reacts, either emotionally or physically, THEY are the ones who get disciplined. Of course nothing gets done about it, it's considered a rite of passage in corporate america.
