if we took a magic wand and waved it over all the players who steal,
causing them to vanish.

name someone who would still be here.

I can tell you one thing there wouldn't even be one so called jazz player.

Are you referring to smooth jazz, straight ahead jazz, fusion, modal jazz, trad jazz, bebop, swing, hard bop, free jazz, or......?

Peg Im not gonna contradict you, but dont you think that Kenny G is having to pay royalties to someone for useing the song?

In the end its just business

I used to listen to Matheny, but he never gave me a woodie or anything, give me Holdsworth, and I know they arent guite the same, but thats just my personal taste.

Anyway it really changes nothing in my world, I think Im gonna put Kashmir on a rap song? What do you think?

There's plenty of good jazz being made by real players. Don't dismiss it all just because it's not your thing.

So, tell me... who did Jelly Roll Morton "steal from"?

How about Jimmy Blanton?

Charlie Parker?

Examples please. (yeah right!!!)

Well, of course it's "business".... but there are listeners and artists like PM who value music as something greater than "business".

I used to listen to Matheny, but he never gave me a woodie or anything, give me Holdsworth, and I know they arent guite the same, but thats just my personal taste.

Not sure what your point is JW. PM doesn't always give me wood either....there are plenty of guitarists on my "list" before him. Still, I respect him for his great chops, his writing, and for not selling out by playing "smoove jazz" to make more money by dumbing down his music to reach a wider market.

Anyway it really changes nothing in my world, I think Im gonna put Kashmir on a rap song? What do you think?

I think you should listen to whatever floats your boat... even if that's Kenny G!

Sorry, no dice. You didn't specify living or dead. Is this your weak attempt at saving face because you can't answer?

And what difference does "living or dead" make? Tell me...who did they "steal" from?

JC just give it up, the more you wiggle the deeper you sink. Go listen to some Diana Krall, here I'll get you started:

Notice that she can play both the left and right hand parts at the same time.

Well, it wasn't your gramps that put forth the goofy notion there is no jazz musician who didn't steal. Was it?

As the saying goes "put up or shut up".

Play you some "Descent original jazz"???? Why waste my time? To give you more to look down your nose upon from your high horse? Thanks, I'll pass.

Clearly you're too close minded to entertain the idea that any exists.

Peg I have a lot of respect for Pat Metheny, not really my cup of tea, I tend to lean toward things I can play, and hes way way over my head. Hes an ambassodor for what he does.

But the same could be said for Kenny G, he may have enlightened some listeners to jazz, that otherwise wouldnt have listened.

Im not that big on either really just kind of looking in from a 3rd person point of view.

Matheny is a purist, G is more of a capitalist, both have thier own audience, and both are entitled to do what they want musically, like I said it is business, and Im sure someone is making money off of the copywrights or publishing of the song, someone signed off and gave G permission. Now if he stole it, thats a whole different thing. But Im sure something that high profile he had to get granted the right to use the music and the tapes to record over it.

How many songs has Matheny covered in his career? Im sure you can go back to Wes Montgomery or someone like that and trace a lot of his stuff, so he should really look in the mirror before he starts pointing fingers, but thats just my opinion, as was said everyone that plays music has stolen something from somewhere, and not given the original credit, as far as G, hes given major credit to the original, so these things can be looked at a lof of different ways.
