Love the sound of the vibes. Sounds like a noisy place.

thanks for the listen/view mike.

those are really a fine set of vibes. they actually sound soooooo much better acoustic or mic'd up....but it's really a pain in arse dealing w mic's w a louder band. unlike most vibes these have a stock pickup system.....a piezo under each bar and they sound quite good. as much volume as needed, tone very close to what they sound like acoustically, zero feedback, no THWACK from a mic getting pummeled by an errant mallet strike (worst sound in the WORLD).

i'm playing thru a ROLAND Cube 60 and there's a SHURE 57 on the amp.

the room isn't too bad at all. the mrs.' phone was around some folks jawing so there's a lot of "crowd noise". the sound guys there do like to run things loud...even on a thurs night when there aren't a lot of folks there to warrant it.

Nice job Mark... You guys are very good... but I agree with mike, the acoustics in that place kind of kill it... Its really nothing anybody can do anything about

YEAH!

Is it me or have there been more "jazz" posts than usual around these parts lately?

OK Planetguy, you CAN quit your day job (as a bassist)..but I hope you don't. :D

"Comin' Home", I've played that one many times. I think I'm gonna steal some stuff from your bass player. The room sound doesn't bother me. We've all heard and played in worse! For a recording that was "phoned in" it's not bad.

I really, REALLY like the way drummer plays. He's got that "low simmer" going on. He's able to cook without being too overwhelming and just keeps that flame going under it. Those are my favorite drummers to play with! 8)

Respect.
For a guy that doesn't label himself a "guitar player", that's better stuff than some have posted in the past, that 'do' claim "guitar player".

What many people don't seem to realize is that many guitarists can play bass, just like many bassists can play guitar.

Granted the technique is different, but if your goal is melodic music you can do some really wonderful things on either instrument if you understand either well enough.

And Jazz isn't bad, it's just different.
I equate it to the milk shake; rock might be any of the regular flavors as in v/c/s but jazz is that other stuff that's tasty except not around all the time like that shamrock shake.

"It's an acquired taste".

well, it's easy enough for a gtrst to "physically" play a bass and make some music on it. but having the right mindset and understanding your role as bassplayer is another thing entirely.

some gtrsts can do that and some you just want to pummel w whatever is handy.

being content and savvy at being a good accompaniest is a definite requirement for any bassist worth their salt. helps if you pride yourself on your accompanying skills too.

some of the best rhythm gtrsts i've played with are actually bassplayers.

i find my favorite bassplayers to play with are the ones who solo. they're content to "get theirs" when they take a solo.....so unlike bassists who DON'T solo...they don't have to "express themselves" by playing a lot of busy a$$ fills all over the place.

thanks to all for checking out the videos and for the positive responses. truth is...those guys carry my dumbass and make me sound like i (sort of) know what i'm doing!

Hmmmm. That's a very interesting premise. It makes sense to me. I think that's always part of the struggle, and also one of the challenging things that I love about playing bass.... finding ways to be creative and imaginative while still doing your job as a bassplayer and maintaining and remembering your place in the hierarchy.

I never ever cared how much or little a bass player plays, as long as he or she sounds good. (Same for most any player, I guess.)

I.e. I'd take the busiest bass player in the known world or otherwise, but be good and DO NOT BLOT OUT THE SUN WITH ALL THAT YOU PLAY.

(There's a limit to even the most genius of anything, PHRASING is EVERYTHING.)

Different strokes/different blokes and all that....but I don't see how you can make a judgement about someone's playing (esp. a drummer or bassist) without taking into consideration how much space they play with.... or don't.

There's nothing I hate more than playing with a busy, fill every 4 bars drummer that doesn't leave space for anyone else to add commentary.

I LIKE that analogy Scott! It reminds me of how I feel about free jazz: Like I'm sipping a milk shake that had bile mixed in with it.

Well, I'm not a fan of free jazz either, but the bile is flowing and on tap for me just as much with bland kenny g/najee/candy dulfer style smooth 'jazz'. And Celine Dion....don't get me started.

well.....except that free jazz was genuinely nasty a lot of the time, and people openly speculated that its occurrence might bring about the death of jazz (which it didn't, tip of the hat to the rise of cool jazz- thank you Brubeck), and these other guys- I mean, what's wrong with Kenny G and Celine Dion? Technique-wise Kenny definitely knows his stuff, same with Dion. And their music breathed life into the industry because it was gorgeous and fantastic and people loved it! I think this whole anti-kenny G business got started by a bunch of old fogies who were bitter they never made it big doing their *cutting edge* improv and started complaning, "duhhhh but that's not REAL jazz."
