ok, i just finished a 70 min upright bass lesson w a fairly new and promising student. late 20's rockabilly player who's decided he's wants to learn theory and be able to play more than slap bass. he's been doing his homework, shows up prepared, let's me finish sentences, and asks intelligent questions that lead to the next lesson topic.

lessons are 'sposed to be 60 min but i don't believe in watching the clock if we're in the middle of something good.

anyway....gtr lessons, mando lessons, elec bass lessons....we're sitting down for. and obviously w upright bass....we're upright.

so....now that he's gone i've got to pack up gtr stuff AND my vibes for tonight's gig. funny...the vibraphone i have is actually "portable"...that is...it's "portable" for a vibraphone. it's still a major pain in the ass breaking it down and setting it up.

and of course i'll be on my feet for tonight's gig. ok, i'm done whining now. i know i should just be happy to have a gig playing originals (all but two songs mine) close to home w some killer musicians who i also happen to like hanging out with!

anyway he asked if the next few we could do two hr lessons! rest assured i WON'T be doing that on a day i have a vibes gig on!

I just listened to your music. I'm not a jazz anything but I did enjoy what I heard. They don't strike my untrained ears as "Jazz" just good sounds. There's just enough ummph in the over-all progressions and arrangements that it feels more like Talking Heads or just David Byrne kind of sounds. Very kewl tribal belly to it!

I liked it too.

Not my ball of wax but it didn't make me want to run.

Actually it was very pleasant sounding.

here ya go george. this is my DEAGAN 594 Norvo Commander vibraphone in action. made in Chicago IL in 1974...or, wait perhaps it IS a Korean piano!!!

vinny, those vibrophenttes never really caught on....and for good reason. not much volume and only 1 1/2 or 2 octaves. (as you prolly know) most vibes are 3 octaves. and lately some companies (YAMAHA, Van der Plas) have extended the range downward another 1/2 octave.

jahva..thanks for checking my tunes and the props. i'm all over the road when it comes to what i listen to, play, and write. i don't know or really worry too much about what category the stuff fits into.

and if it doesn't send scottie running...or give him the runs....it's all good.

well, outside of hauling 'em and setting up/breaking down they are a blast to play out in public. it's not often people get to see someone playing one plus they are a very visual instrument to watch.

i have this theory that people like to subconsciously play a listening game when listening to someone solo. on some level if the listener is engaged and listening then they're kinda anticipating and trying to guess what phrase or notes will come next from the soloist. and it's pretty easy to see on vibraphone if the next note(s) are gonna be higher or lower.

I guess if you are used to driving a Cadillac, you might naturally be a little reluctant to climb into a Fiat.

well, just finished a TWO HR upright bass lesson! luckily no gig tonight, though i do have a bluegrass prct w video recording of some tunes for demo purposes (read: more standing up).

the student wants to continue w two hr lessons but the good news is he asked if we could do them on bass guitar in the future. oh yeah.....i think THAT'S A PLAN!
