I have a Fender Super Reverb, AB763 that is say a "6 out of 10" cosmetically speaking. (4) 10" music man speakers and a whacked 'n waterlogged little cab with no wheels.

I want a Marshall JCM 800 2210 but as usual, my $ is limited.

Another guy I know just offered me his Marshall JCM 2000 DSL 100 watt head in a straight up trade for my Super Reverb.

What do you think?

I figure that in order to be able to use that Super Reverb, I'd have to do a filter cap job and mod it extensively, minimum. ($$$)

I am getting pressure to keep it, but it's really not my sound and I don't have a good "distortion type" head as of yet. (Marshall JCM 800 2210, JCM 2000 DSL, JCM 2000 TSL etc.)

I'm all ears...

Life is too short to go without the amp you want especially when you are sitting on a vintage amp that is worth more than one that would make you happy. The DSL100 is a fine amp that can cover a lot of Mashall territory. I would sell your amp outright and then go amp shopping for something you really enjoy. Your amp is worth $200 - $400 more than that DSL even in it's present "could use servicing" condition. Unless you are getting a few hundred to even the deal or that DSL is loaded with Vintage glass I would pass and sell it.

Yeah the problem is that every jackass in the known world wants to give you the bare minimum for the amp.

And I get sick of dealing with morons and children.

I simply don't want to invest $ in that amp.

Would you say that an even up trade, my super reverb for a JCM 800 2210 would be an even and fair exchange?

Yes, a trade for a JCM800. a 1959SLP, a 1987, a JPM, a Vintage Modern or any amp that sells for $800 - $1k. Either that or the guy making the offer needs to cough up a few hundred or offer something in addition the the DSL in trade. You are at minimum $200 light on that trade. If that's okay with you just go for it. Like I said, ultimately it comes down being happy with your equipment. Do what makes YOU happy and don't worry about what other people say.

Capt considering what it would take to make the Fender sound Marshally, it sounds like a decent trade to me.

Im sure the DSL will get the distortion you are looking for, plus be able to get it at a manageable level compared to the fender.

Sure if you sit on the Fender a while and advertise you might get a little more out of it, but by then the Marshall would be gone, sounds like a clean way to get out of an amp to me. Ive ussually taken a bath on any gear Ive sold or traded.

I just don't want to have to take the bath on this one.

I thought I'd take any 100 watt head type Marshall JCM 800 2210 or a JCM 2000 DSL or a JCM 2000 TSL. I could make any of them work out of the box, with no worries and I need a good distortion head.

That Super Reverb is alright if you are playing a harmonica or super clean, but otherwise is difficult to get going the direction I want.
(At least as far as I know..I am a player, not a tech)

I looked at the filter caps and I'm betting it needs a cap job.
No leakage but they look decrepit as it gets and still functioning.

Then you get the issue of what's actually reading what microfarad-wise.
I could see spending some real cash that I don't have free to blow.

I laughed pretty hard when I took this amp to a local amp shop that said they'd do it, but they wanted to take off the FENDER plate and attach their own. The owner said he'd do it at a discount if I would consent.

I told him "I'd think about it" but all the way back I just kept thinking "what the heck is this guy thinking"?

If you are in NJ, it pays to take your amp to Dave's Sound Repair in Whippany.

I went somewhere else and I won't reveal since they were so nice to me, but I just don't trust anyone else to do the job right and at a decent cost anymore.

Too many hacks out there...and once it's all chopped up, "it is what it is".

I hear you brother, there are a lot of hacks out there. I got fed up with it after paying $380 to have an old Sound City serviced and having it come back with exactly the same problem it went in with. I was very specific about what the symtoms were and even gave it to them in writing so the tech would be sure to see it. All they did to fix it was replace all of the tubes with cheap Jolita crap tubes. I got pissed, did my research and diagnosed it as bad filter caps. What I had given in writing was text book bad cap symptoms that any two bit hack should have known. I learned a lot in the process of fixing it and have since done all my own work unless I want something special done like a '47 Masco PA I'm sending off to Skip Simmons to rebuild into a cool blues amp. I agree, get what makes you happy. Make sure you thoroughly test potential new candidates. Some of those Marshalls only give up the goods at unusable volume levels. Egnators are pretty good too and have Fender, Marshall and Vox tone on tap. Try them in the big stores then look for them used on Craiglist. That way you don't take a hit when you decide to flip it down the road. There are loads of used amps available in the Northeast so take advantage of it.

I've got a friend who puts on most of the major guitar shows around America. I started out half-owner of a store with him in '83 but sold my share and he went on to be extremely successful. He's a fair dealer with a lot of stock.

If ANYONE will make your dream come true, it would be Eugene Robertson.

He also owns a few pawn shops and this is the best place to reach him.
