If acoustic guitarists can augment a song by switching to an electric/amplified guitar with effects, than an acoustic drummer should have the same luxary of pounding out patterns and beats with augmented electric kits (aka drum machines). The point being, it still takes professional musicianship to execute and deliver music with such devices.

Exactly.
Many industrial groups sound okay.
But, I've always found the percussion lacking because it is actually a guitarist programming a drum machine.
Big difference.

Aren't virtuosos and shredders separate things?

I can shred like Steve Vai, Joe Satriani., Yngwie Malmsteen, Randy Rhoads, Michael Angelo Batio or George Lynch. But when I have to tone down on the guitar "wankery", I fall back on my S.R.V., Jimi Hendrix, Robin Trower, Eric Clapton and David Gilmore phrasing.
It's just as important to lay back and let the notes breath and or have some vocal type playing. Playing shred can be a gate way drug, so I listen to Piano, Saxophone, Violin or Sitar music to open me up to new ideas.

That was cool as hell and sounded awesome..

If anyone was ashamed to play something like this, just throw away your gear and quit. You belong in a bakery, not playing music.

That was sweet. So that's a MIDI vibe? The patch makes it sound like a keyboard.

it's a midi controller called a malletKAT. it's made by Alternate Mode, the same folks who make the drumKAT.

i own one and they're pretty cool. as you'd suspect they work best for mallet sounds (vibes, steel drums, marimba, etc) and playing drums/percussion but keys, strings, synth sounds....they all work on it.

the songs on my page that have marimba and synth/keys were played on one.

when i was playing in an "island band" i used it mostly for steel drums and marimba.

of course, you could play the same stuff on a keyboard but the visual aspect of the KAT is always an attention grabber when playing out.

But can you shred like EVH?
