so if my home gets blown down by a freak wind storm tonight, I can get bailed out? just given money to rebuild? not a loan, but a gift from the taxpayers? and any idiot that is living on the seacoast dumb enough to build on the beach deserves what they get.. if they had money to afford beachfront property (which most of us can't afford) then they have enough money to rebuild..

George has nailed it. Govt has no business borrowing money against my new grandson's account to bail out people it deems worthy.

(unlike the flood victims in Tenn. several years ago who were not deemed worthy)

My church is very good at making money talk - we were there for 9/11 and Katrina. 97 cents of every dollar goes to the cause and a lot of retired members go to the scene and work for free. (we do feed them!)

Am I willing to help those folks in NY / NJ. I suppose i am but not thru the vehicle of govt. And where are the rich folks up there, the middle class and so on? Are they not helping each other? (not a smart aleck question - I just don't know)

yeah, there were rich fat cats living on the shore who were effected but they're the minority. far more of the people effected are just working class slobs in ordinary neighborhoods.

when I lived in Florida from 1980 to 1990 many areas were not eligible to even buy flood insurance due to the high risk of flooding from hurricanes.(I did not buy a lot in Bithlo just east of Orlando cause of this). if the people that were destroyed by Sandy had insurance then why do they need assistance?.. I would love to live by the sea like everybody else but common sense tells me no.. don't these beggars asking for help have any common sense?

It's my understanding that a great deal of "aid" was refused by state governments due to political ideology differences.
As well as being "redirected" into areas of "wealth and persuasion" instead of being duly metered out to all those in need.

Another issue that should warrant reconsideration by our northern brethren.
If indeed all this is true.

So, we should shut down FEMA and the Army Core of Engineers?

I think if you really contemplate that question you will realize that those agencies are designed to be supportive of universal needs.
Not a specific economic response directed at a small group of individuals.
Your not an idiot , your capable of discerning the difference.

I'm honestly trying to discern the logic and understand your sentiments

So, in trying to figure that out, let me ask- Wouldn't a local small-town fire department fall under that description of "response directed at a small group of individuals"?

How would hurricane relief be any different than putting out the flames engulfing an individual home, or even an 8-unit apartment building?
WRONG! you PAY for fire and police protection by paying LOCAL PROPERTY TAX and REAL ESTATE TAX.. I just paid mine .. but if I have need of the volunteer fire dept. that will be another fee added on top..
Outside the cost and scale, the two are the same, are they not?

I'm not pissing on anyone. I just don't believe in govt being the vehicle of charity.

Charity is something we do from our hearts and for which others are greatful.

We all resent the extortiontent amount of money the govt pigs steal from us so it's hardly cheerful giving. Nor are the recipients of govt 'aide' grateful. It's lose lose.

I give away rather a fair amount of money to take care of my own, to charity and to the church. I do it cheerfully.

But I resent every penny the govt pigs steal from me. You want help the New Yorkers? I'm willing. But not via govt. Did you see that volunteers from the south were actually turned away because they didn't belong to the damned unions?

Y'know, F*CK CHARITY!
How about some economic justice?
You bitch and moan about taxes when the richest 1% have gamed the system to MAKE YOU PAY THEIR SHARE for them.
All material wealth derives from labor.
But, the working class only get the crumbs left by fatass elites who OWN EVERYTHING.
The government is OWNED by them.
Know who your enemy is.

WOW,,, You are bitter. Mike I feel bad about that.
You have to give, charity is just the beginning of all the wealth that will be returned, most of the time in unexpected ways. Sorry Mike, I wish you would just go think that out a bit more.

Well, I'm getting a little annoyed reading everyone's comments.
Uncle Sam cannot come to the rescue fast enough when Katrina hit.
They got $60 Billion in aid.
But, for some reason, people in the northeast hit by Sandy aren't worth a friggin' penny to these assholes.
F*ck anybody who thinks the government has no role to play in these situations.
This government was created by "we the people" for the common good, "to create a more perfect union", not "every man for himself" or "screw you, I got mine."
Ayn Rand has totally mindf*cked you people.
