On my BM player.

Used to Be V2.1, pretty happy with this mix. The vocals may be a little soft at the start, but I didn't want to overpower the guitars. Probably will tweak it a little when I have all the album songs ready to be mastered.

For the rockers, House of Stone. I mentioned this in another thread, had a remix done by someone, and I tweaked that a bit to get more of 'my thing' back in it. This was a tough one to work with, I recorded all the guitars with a ton of distortion and had some clipping going on in the guitars and the vocals, but if I had to retrack anything, I'd never capture the feel of when I did it the first time.

I like House of Stone it has a retro/alternative sound and feel to it.

The first tune has some timing issues to me ears. When the snare comes in it's ahead on the beat and gets worse through it's part. Like it's speeding the tune up. Same for the second part with the snare.

It's a nice song though.

You've got a 'musician's ear' regarding the timing. I've been trying to fit the drums to the song after the fact. It's actually the timing of the guitars that's f**k! I'll have to keep 'nudging' the drums.

That does smoke right along. Sort of like Rammstein playing industrial backup for the Birds in some places. With a little Paul Simon for seasoning.

The biggest thing I'm hearing is a problem I'm guilty of also. Trying to get by with inexpensive microphones. This may sound silly but the whole mix sounds flat. The performance is good but the recording is missing that whole upper range harmonics that add so much.

The conundrum is going back and trying to remaster the tracks to bring out that sparkle that wasn't picked up by those less expensive mic's.

Just my silly opinion, but maybe it will help you understand what you are doing that is actually so good.

Always remember that what we do here are demos, not finished tracks. It's not a wasted effort, take what you've learned and move on.

And Glenny, inexpensive mics are the reality of home recording. Most people can't afford an $1,800 microphone. But a professional studio can. If you need better results spend your time and money at a pro studio.

I have a closet full of tapes that had to be tossed because I didn't do the pre-production planning and get the tempo and drums exactly right first. Some people learn faster than others.

Without a solid foundation it will always sound like musicians who don't play together very well. A pro studio with an experienced engineer would never let this happen. This song is a learning experience and not a keeper.

Two things I can try on this song: 1) Record 'drums', playing them on my keyboard - this may result in a tighter sound. 2) drop the drums entirely.

My AKG Perception 220 is the most I can afford for vocals. Without a true 'studio' environment to record in, a more expensive mic is unlikely to get noticeably better results.

Remember these are unmastered recordings.

"Playing" drums on keyboards sucks! I don't have the place for a full kit, and my wife won't let me get one anyway.
Going with the 'no drums' solution for this song, rather than trying to duplicate everything just to match up with a drum track.
