Sometimes I wonder if some musicians actually have a clue...
I went to an audition here a few years ago, showed up 15 minutes early. Band leader didn't say anything but it wasn't too hard to see he wasn't happy. Drummer had car trouble and didn't show up. they recorded rehearsals, so with 2 guitars and bass and the recordings we went through a few things, some of it with just me and the recording, including one song I had never heard. I did guitar and sax parts on that one, on listening I asked him to run it back by me again, did a second harmony sax part in a couple of places, then a third to make it a sax section except for the solos. Never even heard the song before mind you...
So they called me back the next week for an audition with drummer...he had given me a CD with some of their songs, I told him I wouldn't have a chance to do more than listen a time or two. (I had 4 days, band practice with regular band the next night, which he knew about, gig fri and sat nights 4 hours away, 3 computers on the bench to work on)
got to the second audition Tuesday night, drummer was there and immediately started jumping on me because I didn't have all their material down. I don't even know if I'm a member of the group at this point, no reason I should have their material down, and he knew I wouldn't have time for much more than a quick listen. Drummer and bass player were on my case all night, drummer 20 years younger than me tried to tell me how to practice...I wasn't happy...
He finally emailed me the song with the sax section, he had mixed in 2 guitar player's leads, (but not on top of each other) mine and another guy auditioning, barely able to tell the sax section was there at all it was buried in the mix, sax solo too loud, chorus on my guitar and I don't own a chorus, chorus all over the other guitar too so I couldn't tell who played what, way too much bass, muddy sounding, I think he put chorus on the sax but not sure, hard to tell with all the chorus on everything...and he had one of those damn infernal Roland chorus amps, and you guessed it, he had chorus turned on all night...rather than using it tastefully now and then...
I called him 4 times trying to return his call the next day, left messages every time, finally gave up and to this day have no idea why he called me...I was really hoping he was calling to tell me they wanted me to play so I could have the pleasure of telling him find another monkey...and why...
I'm a member of the BOMB SQUAD.
If you see me running, better catch up!
