Aptitudes are no doubt inherited.
But, believe it or not, it can also be absorbed if you are surrounded by talent - something psychological about it.
You don't see things as special or unattainable if you're in it - it's just normal.

That's why I suck so bad. I was always surrounded by JCPs and Missourians.

I don't like being surrounded by Missourians either.. but it's cheap relatively to live here, and the climate is tolerable

George

That's a good looking group of boys you got there. (still can't figure how we lost the big one!)

In a band like that you wouldn't have to worry about brawlers, Inijuns or tricky agents.

I have a sort of wacky belief that we are not the men (or women, Peg!) that our ancerstors were. We have cool toys but have no idea how they work.

But we have one thing they didn't have and that's for sure: electric guitars!

LOL . . . My hair don't came from my mothers side of the family.

My fathers people ( these would be my fathers mothers people ) have lots of hair.
My dad is in his 80's and has more hair than I do.

Intuitively I think a 50% nature, 50% nurture is probably about right. Basic language and math skills have clear hereditary lines and I suspect music is no different.

In my family we were always around music but no extraordinary players that I am aware of. I have known for a long time that I have to work harder at it than many. I have been playing since I was 11 yrs old and put in untold 1000s of hrs practicing but often I will see some 16 yr old kid walk in, hear a song once and play it well. I am floored by this natural talent and the reality of our different gifts.

Good topic Kramer.

George you definitely fit right into that band. :D

Would the Forum-Control-Police please recognize that discussions about Bankers , Lawyers Religion and Politics are the salt and source of good musical tale. :D

As a musician (Arguable...) I cant imagine a more boring conversation with other musicians than one about 'music'. Its like two bakers going on and on about the flour in their dough. Succinctly put........zzzzzzzzz...

SInce the subject of genetic predisposition to musical ability has cropped up...Sorry folks, but genes cant fix "lack of imagination" There are dozens of skilled organ grinders out there, But the monkey is still the better act...

If you insuist on discussing music...then crimeny sakes , give us something worthy or STFU. (as in keep your sarcasm about "OUR" need to indulge other topics to a minimum)

Thank you! and Welcome the FK to AMerica, land of Free speech!

There were characters in my family, Judy Garland was a distant relative. One of my ancestor's got thrown overboard trying to stowaway on a ship bound for America. His kids were adopted by the nanny who gave them her last name.
