so what do you do, take a gene test and then quit if the markers don't show up?

Yes.
If you 'can' quit.

if you could follow your family tree back far enough and find you have troubadors as your relatives, the continue on being a musician.. otherwise quit..

LOL I wasnt posting this to justify my own musical existence...

I posted it because I've seen it discussed and argued before whether or not musical skills were inherent or learned, and in most of those discussions it would usually end up with the 'learned' crowd claiming the win.

Not that it's a contest. I put my own remarks about my genes just to add to the topic.. I always wondered if my skill was strictly learned or if I had some knack that all people do or don't have. I will expose myself in the regard that yes, I would like to think I'm special, and that any skills I have aren't just something anyone can do.. that it takes something extraordinary to do what I (or we) do.

I never was able to explain why I was so drawn to playing, or what drove me to stay in my room and practice so furiously in my teens while everyone else was out socializing... I just knew that I was driven and took far more enjoyment from it than most others who did it casually.

Maybe that's the difference between those of us who bleed for our bands where others blow off practices and gigs? Maybe that explains singers (/ducks!).. Maybe it means nothing and I'm just kidding myself.

At LEAST it's a musical topic and not about jews, god, politicians, bankers, or lawyers.

you do bring up valid points about ability)ies of humans in general.. not only music, but mechanics aptitude could be inherited as well, and mathematics intelligence is no doubt more than 50% inherited, since just look up the more advanced mathematician's lineage, and you see the ability goes back generations, generally Jewish families.. my grandma's maiden name on my mother's side was Teller, and often thought if I was related to Edward. V. Teller, also she was from a university town, Iowa City, and Teller was from University of Chicago

And most of us who aren't driven to being combative and cruising for the next scuffle got that. Thanks Kramerguy, it's appreciated.

LOL Thanks . . . a goodly portion of my family past and present are musicians.
One of these Gents is my great grandfather.
This Czech ( Bohemian ) band was photographed we believe in Wharton Tx. shortly after WWI
Sadly no one in my family (remaining alive) is sure which one is Great Granddad. One day I intent to study all the old family photos to make an attempt at a positive ID.

And please . . . my name is George. :D

Sans,
I'm guessing it's the squinty eyed guy with the mustache and receding hairline... or the squinty eyed guy without a mustache and receding hairline!
