I came up with some, Coldplay, "Rush of Blood to the Head" live version. Jonny Buckland does this ominous sound with his guitar using heavy delay and a brass slide.

Also, Mike Einziger (Incubus lead guitarist) does an awesome intro for "Megalomaniac."

Peace out, GuitarAnatomy.

Just thought of a few more, couple of really good ones, couple you may never have heard of.

Mesmerization Eclipse - Captain Beyond
Beside Myself - Jethro Tull I've seen them do this one live, Martin Barre gets nothing near the credit he deserves as a guitar player, he makes this intro sound fabulous on a strat
Welcome to the Club - Joe Walsh
Good Clean Fun - Allman Brothers
Three Lock Box - Sammy Hagar
Bad Motor Scooter - Montrose (Hagar too, he wrote it)
and of course...
Stranglehold - Ted Nugent

Dude, Bad Motor Scooter is still one of my favorite songs on the planet!
That Montrose album is one of the thickest sounding guitar albums from the day. Your Like Candy Baby, Hard Sweet and Sticky. Thanks I have got to find that one again.

Im sure the first for me was Smoke On The Water and then Thunderbird by ZZ Top, and then Needle And The Spoon.

New Years we Played Whipping Post for the first time in a long time, we pulled out some twin lead harmonies.....................

That is a cool intro but it's bass.

Hmm, a lot of the ones mentioned are awesome. Ones I can think of off the top of my head...

Deep Purple - Smoke on the Water. So simple...and yet when you hear those first 3 chords you know EXACTLY what's coming.

Alice in Chains - Rotten Apples - love the tone on both guitars on this intro.

Jimi Hendrix - Purple Haze (of course!)

G'N'R - My Michelle

Not exactly a guitar intro, but kick ass anyway...

Judas Priest - "The Hellion"

An intro will set you up for the song. It could be a series of notes and a couple chords, whatever.
If the song just launches, there is no intro.
So I agree: I don't think Smoke on the Water has an Intro.
.
For an intro, think of songs like "Long Cool Women in a Black Dress," or "Roundabout." . . . .
Those are intros . . .

The original "Animals", after their monster hit "House of the Riseing Sun" successfully followed up with a whole series of great songs. "Don't let me be Missunderstood","It's My Life","We Gotta Get Out Of This Place", ect.
On each song, bassist "Chas Chandler" played a strong introductory line, sometimes doubled on guitar by "Hilton Valintine".Cream did a similar thing with "Sunshine of Your Love". I think it's time for a revival of this kind of songwriting.
