Really Jimmy? Do you really want to go in this direction with me? Just so you know, I wasn't talking about your reply in this particular thread so who's doing the assuming?

Really Mikey? You're going to backpedal? You just happened to invoke my name on a thread that I had made an admittedly lame joke? And just so you know, music is made for other people. When it's made for yourself it is masturbation. I didn't make the rules, it's just the way it is.

Well, that's not right.
Great art is great art.
Bad art just sucks.
How/why it is made is kind of irrelevant.
Henry Darger worked in isolation his whole life.
He never showed his work to anyone.
But, he's one of the greatest outsider artists ever.

Backpedal my a$$. The joke was about another thread not long ago where you were talking about guitar wanking and musical masturbation. Most people don't go by your rule book anyway Jimmy. Maybe if you played in front of crowds larger than 10 people under the age of 50 you would know that a little guitar wanking solo can really fire a crowd up.

It depends on the crowd.
Some really get off on musical gymnastics, some don't.
I know that a lot of places I've played wouldn't really care how amazing a guitarist is.

hey, there's people ready and willing to pay good coin to have someone drop trow and masturbate.....who cares? it's STILL masturbation. whether there's an audience or not.

Mike I suppose it depends on the type of music your playing. Some music is not guitar driven as in lead or solos. I'm not like Jimmy. My taste in music is wide. Even so, just because I don't like something doesn't mean it's not music.

How is it masturbation Planetguy? That's just some silly phrase you old farts use.

MikeG: I've played to crowds of a thousand and I've played to ten people and everything in between. So what. And the average age for someone at our shows is around thirty. You do like to assume a lot don't you?

MikeN: I had to Google Henry Darger, I had never heard of him before. He sounds like an interesting guy, but I don't think I'll have time to read a 15,145 page book any time soon. It's debatable whether art created in isolation as an "outsider" is any better than art created for and consumed by an audience and reviewed by critics. I would say his case is outside the norm.

Rachmaninov worked hard on his first symphony, and when it premiered it bombed horribly. He contemplated suicide and nearly stopped composing. But eventually he got back on the horse and composed the Piano Concerto No.2 which was a smash hit. If you listen to the first symphony you can see why it flopped; it's really bad art. But because of that whole experience his art got much better. So if he had worked in isolation you have to wonder if his compositions would have ever gotten any better.

Quit being so phucking serious all the time Jimmy. It must be tough walking through life with a constant hard on. I saw something on TV that said if you have an erection lasting longer than 4 hours you need to seek medical attention right away. I hope it's not to late for you.

Getting some feedback never hurts.

But, I never tried to please an audience.
I antagonized them.
I felt like performing was a battle.
It was "us" on the stage against "them" in the audience.
But, they loved it.
Go figure.

If you have an erection lasting 40 years or longer seek medical attention right away!

That's basically the Iggy model; antagonize your audience into a love/hate relationship. He hates the audience and they love him back. Go figure.

i'm pretty sure the word (and act of) masturbation knows no age boundaries.

my definition (or one of 'em) of when music veers towards masturbation is when little is being said and it's being said in a "look at me" and "check out how many notes i can play" showboating way with little else going on and little substance.

and who decides who makes that judgement? i do. as does anyone else listening to anything.

when you get a little older perhaps you'll figure out some of this stuff but in the meantime be thankful you have old farts around to school you. (no thanks necessary)

Yes many of us old farts need a little theme development and melody for a solo to create a connection with the listener. This is clearly not required of adolescent males who get all they need with mindless speed-wanking and fretboard pyrotechnics. Different strokes for different folks.

 Ok that was funny.

As Guthrie Govan once said: "If you must play fast, at least play something interesting."
