War Pigs - It was '91 and I was 13 years old. My mom bought me a piece of junk guitar and amp from a pawn shop for my birthday. She also got me the songbook in tab for Faith No More's 'Epic' in which they did a cover of War Pigs. I didn't really know who Black Sabbath was yet, but I knew that War Pigs was by far the best song on the record.

I think my second song was enter sandman lol.
I also remember trying to learn Dead Embryonic Cells by Sepultura. crazy hard for a beginner.

House of the Rising Sun, complete with Alan Price's organ solo. I was 14 when I learned it by "rote" and I played it good enough to get me into my first band.

Citizen,
I have that "Faith no more" album on cassette always play it in the pickup "Fully Cranked"! I prefer it to Sabbath's original.

"Sunshine of Your Love" by Cream. I had two guitar players in the band, and both of them were taking lessons from the same guy. He taught it to them, and they taught it to me.

Hmm... First songs. Well, "One" by Metallica was amongst the first. I think before that I learned "Not Enough" by Our Lady Peace (Awesome band by the way). I remember learning many many pieces of songs, but whole songs were rare back then. Now I am learning everything, lol.

But I know the following songs (There are more, I just cannot think of them all right now):

1. Master of Puppets - Metallica
2. One - Metallica
3. Welcome Home (Sanitarium) - Metallica (Finishing off this one with the solos and a couple of missed rhythm parts)
4. Cumbersome - Seven Mary Three (7M3)
5. It's Been Awhile - Staind
6. Bleeding Me - Metallica
7. Keep Away - Godsmack
8. And Justice For All - Metallica (No wah pedal, thus I do not know the solo)
9. Bound to the Floor - Local H (Extremely easy)

That is all I can think of right now, my mind is a bit slow, there are way more than that I know all the way through. As you see I really glued myself to Metallica, lol. I think there are by now a billion songs from many bands that I have learned portions of, but have yet to finish.

Although, I am working on the following:

1. Shine - Collective Soul (Almost got this down, just working on the solo)
2. Outshined - Soundgarden (Just about got this down, just started working on it today)
3. Glasgow Kiss - John Petrucci
4. Rise Today - Alter Bridge (Just putting the finishing touches on the solo)
5. Alive - Pearl Jam (Really need that tremolo bar and wah now, lol)
6. Enter Sandman - Metallica (I learned this, but, I have failed to properly learn the beginning and the solo, lol. Just too lazy at times)
7. Orion - Metallica (Two solos down, one to go, and need to work on the rhythm and harmony portions, basically have to learn the whole thing, lol)

Alright, that is just a brief list of things I am working on. I have been working on my own stuff lately, have a ton of riffs I am piecing together. Soloing is another essential aspect of my playing, I have been learning a lot of solos as well as soloing over other peoples things. I am a very busy guitarist, learning tons of stuff lately, lol.

But back on topic, as far as first things go, Our Lady Peace was one of the first bands stuff I worked on.

Peace out, GuitarAnatomy.

Iron Man - Black Sabbath
Smoke on the Water - Deep Purple

Of course I didn't find out until years later I wasn't playing them correctly!

In this approximate order:
1 - House of the Rising Sun - Animals
2 - It Don't Come Easy" - Beatles
2 - Smoke on the Water -Deep Purple
4 - (1970s, so, of course) Stairway to heaven.
5th and 6th songs were 'blues jams,' with friends
7 - Iron Man - Black Sabbath
8, 9, 10th songs were three more originals
11 - Moondance
12 - China groove
13, 14 Two more originals
- - - after that - don't recall . . . Perhaps "Lonely People" by America?

"You best (believe me)" By me! I played originals for years before learning my first cover. I can't even remember what the first cover was.

House of the Rising Son by The Animals

Blackbird by The Beatles

Smoke on the Water by Deep Purple

Music Box Dancer by Frank Mills

Carry on Wayward Son by Kansas

In between I started writing my own songs, pretty much immediately and preferred writing original music to learning covers ever since.

Little Brown Jug

1960, 5 years old, grandparents' house, uncle caught me banging on his silvertone acoustic.Told me to plaay it right, then taought me to di so...3 chords and I was playing a song inside an hour.

Rhythm man.. I think Ringo did "It don't Come Easy" as a solo artist after hte Beatles broke up. and I've played everything on your list except Iron Man and Moondance. Moondance was a great song, one of Van Morrison's best.

hehe... I was tinkering with Smoke on the Water last night on an acoustic tuned to open G with a slide bar...surprisingly it works rather well. One of my favorite heavy songs to try and work out an acoustic version, open G and slide is the best way I've run across so far.
