I have a new piece of music that will be recorded soon and will be uploaded to BandMix for review by all the resident experts here.. it has the flavor of Brazilian Jazz crossed with Christopher Cross LOL!

I learned a long time ago to not have to high of expectations about original music. I have even had well known recording engineers tell me "I have never understood the music business" It really makes no sense at all! That's not why I write and record music. Having said that nothing and I mean NOTHING gives me greater satisfaction than to start with the basic structure of a song and just see where it goes! That to me is SO COOL! Back in 1996 a band I was in did it the way you are supposed to. We took the originals that were written did the pre-production hell we even took the songs and played them at gigs for 6 months then we went into the studio and recorded them. We tried to make it and we were in fact one of the top bands in Houston but the music business was changing and we got left behind. I tried for a long time doing everything the right way to stay ahead of the changes in the music biz. Finally I got too old. I mean who wants to watch some OLD bad ass musicians play there stuff. Now I am fine with the way things wound up. I write my songs and record them with complete control. Hell I don't I don't even have to argue with other musicians because its just me, sometimes I get pissed at the mulletman too LOL! When I want to play live I just go play with my friends and we have a HELL of a time rockin the crowd! Really to me my songs are an artistic expression and that's all. If you like them cool if you don't Oh WELL!

Whenever I've been able to play in front of an audience I've always had a really great reaction with my originals.
Strangers buying me lots of drinks and stuff.
Playing other people's music just made the audience yawn & fart.
Having said that though, I know that there is no way in Hell I'd ever get any airplay to get a hit.
Not bloody likely.
It just isn't made for mass-consumption.
But, I'd rather just play in my little corner with whoever digs what I'm doing anyway.
:)

I could say that everything I record is hit worthy, even if I hit record by accident, but nah... Never felt that way.

ALL my originals are hits, so much so that I was told there's dozens of fisherman bob impersonators in China making a fortune off me, and I'll never see a dime of it.

As long as I'm satisfied when I've completed a song, I don't give a f*ck what anyone else thinks. But when I get a comment like 'I really like '.....', or similar, it's just a nod that I did ok.

"We" got offered 500$ for the tune I dig the most so far but it seemed like a slap in the face at the time.

Interesting Topic.
Yeah I do from time to time. I do have some good material, I like it, if I didn't I wouldn't bother. I do listen to it regularly also, so that I get a perception of what I am really doing. Then I go listen to hundreds of songs by other people, mostly Indie artists and such in my genre, then sort of place myself in that database for a moment. I've had perhaps now, around a 1000 really nice comments, both online and off about what I do, but that just isn't enough.

I think everyone here will have written ONE really good song, with merit that could go somewhere with it. However - Video and TV is the box to aim to get into.Without that you really have nothing these days. YouTube used to be a great place to promote. However they missed the 'Friend and communication' ethic that spawned MySpace and FB. Sure you can post a thousand videos, but it is the one GOOD one that gets attention.

Even if you did post a GREAT song. The amount of publishing time on boards like this, would quickly bore the pants off most. So people create more and more material, often not as good as that ONE song, then we muddy the waters by over calculating the response, by posting more.
What I am starting to do, is get my package together, I strongly suggest anyone who wants to even have a chance at something, to do the same.

* Video
* Albums including GOOD artwork.
* Profile & Bio
* Good images
* Website? Hmmm
* Demos only for would be consumers
* A CLEAR Band/Musician/Composer Image

Most promoters want that one song, either for you to play it, or to sell it on to someone else. Make sure what your Market is, and if you are willing and have the balls to sell it on. No ego's apply.
But most promoters want you to do it again, and again, and again. That is where the REAL money is, you then become a viable product to consumers.
"Listen to my new song" generally will not cut it these days.

As for me, I know I am not mainstream as regards my musical product. I will attempt to change this a little in the future, use the backdrop I have in music, but the way I write will not change. I think that is a very, very important asset to anyone involved in music. One day you'll be the 'Doggies danglers', the next month someone else will be. But staying there, doing what YOU do as an outfit or solo act, is of paramount importance, because that is you. People want that more than ever these days.

Cheers.

I've written a few things that made me feel that way- not just giddy, but satisfied and proud. I realized a long time ago that while a few specific songs I wrote feel extremely catchy and profound, that they are by far an acquired taste that the general masses would not particularly appreciate.

I'm working on something I consider to be the best theme/composition by far that I've ever worked on, but am too afraid to 'float' it on the internet because I'm worried that if it is actually good, that someone will either steal it, or steal the idea and change it enough that no legal recourse would be possible. I never used to play things so close to the chest, but I've seen it happen enough to others in the last few years that I have no faith in people anymore. This is a good reason why I don't have any audio posted.

I've thought to upload some covers, but just don't see the point.

Kramer - record it, and copyright it. It's only $35 to copyright a whole album at one time.
