I am thinking of getting recording software for my new laptop. When and if you have time please look at the comparison chart I have linked below and tell me your thoughts. I am considering the Studio version. It will be especially helpfull from those of you that have experience with these types of recording software. Thanks in advance! Jeff

I like Sonar cakewalk 6, but the newer versions seem to be all about something even more complicated.

IF I HAD A NEW LAPTOP, I'd probably bite the bullet and attempt to learn the new software. (gulp)

No.

Cubase
Studio One
Reaper

If you're not going Protools, pick one of the above.

I know NOTHING about this so what are the good and bad of sonar cakewalk X2, cubase, studio one, reaper? I don't want to make a mistake I will regret by getting software that doesn't do what I need. Basically I want to record my songs by doing everything myself. I want to take the song from concept to master. I would like lots of flexability with effects, sounds, amp plug in, vitual instruments and I would prefer to stay under $300.00 but thats not a deal killer?

Yeah Logic is good too, but it's Mac only.

http://studioone.presonus.com/
Free trial of full version.

I'd try a few before buying.

You can do everything you want with Cubase or Studio One, not sure about Reaper, but reaper is essentially free.

I just have the stance that friends don't let friends buy Cakewalk

Heck with it, PRO TOOLS is the standard.

What do you use Cap'n and what are the pro's and con's? I heard Pro tools is harder and more of a learning curve? they do give clinics at the local GC on PT

I have an older T42 laptop.
The first nincompoop I was involved with was using Sonar 6.
(He was difficult to say the least.)
But it was fast and it used little resources with few problems playing multiple tracks.

When I migrated from that setup to the next one, I was introduced to Sonar 7. All of a sudden, resources are an issue as in it seemed to lock up if you used too many tracks and it seemed oddly complicated for no apparent reason.

The next person was Les and he was using Sonar 8, I think.
He also uses X1 but it seems as if they are trying to make it more complicated. I don't see a benefit for what they did to it, but you know I am 90% creative and 10% idiot..ok maybe more idiot than not.

I know some about Pro Tools now, but it does seem very complicated and at the same time on does get something a little better out of it (IF YOU KNOW HOW TO USE IT). I don't understand it fully. I tried to work with it and my brain just bleeds uncontrollably.

Having said that, I still use Sonar Cakewalk 6.
I am not good at it.
Mary Had a Little Lamb was my last project and she sang off key and I "Atomic Bitchwaxed" the whole thing. I added crap on top she didn't like and I laughed at her when she complained. I told her that she should either pay her bill or stfu. She said she never got a bill and I said "EXACTLY". lol

Jeff since you have a new laptop, if I were you I think I would go the PRO TOOLS route. Yeah it'll be a bitch to get it up to your own personal level but once you do, you'll be happy with the product.

And I would def plan on going to those clinics that they offer if I were you.

I, personally, have a copy of Sonar 6. (eBay is a wonderful thing sometimes) My laptop has a stone gear in it, so I can't leave the low resource environment. Besides, I do like it and I am almost ready to conquer Mary Had A Little Lamb. LOL

(If that bitch complains again; she and the lamb are staying for dinner, I'm going to cook one of them and serve it to the other. lol)

http://www.reaper.fm

Free to download the full version, only $60 to register it. Extensive manual, and help forums. So far the only things I have heard that much more expensive DAWs offer are the virtual instruments. For the cost differential, you can buy these and have $$ left over.

Studio One (pro) has a built in mastering suit. Print Redbook cd or export directly to soundcloud.
Built in melodyne pitch correction.

Dunno what Reaper Allows.

Hey-hey pitch correction is a cheat.

Auto tune is a joke. Use it like an effect you never use because it sounds stupid and clunky.

If record something that sounded good and it's out of tune/out of whack/just plain out...better to rerecord it. (imo)
