I spent Saturday morning dealing with a tube delima. I bought some tubes from eurotubes for my Cavin V3M. The new tubes are JJ's I could not get the tone out of the power amp sec. when properlly biased. What I discovered after going back and forth for a couple hrs. is that I prefered the original Sovteck tubes in the power amp section, and the jj's in the preamp section. that sucker is humming now! anyone else have this problem? thanks in advance!

tesla tubes pretty much suck all the way round
though it's not as noticeable in the 12ax7's
sovteks are ok but a little flat.

tungsols are the best sounding tubes by far
in every application

though if you like a bit of heavier overdrive (and who dosen't?)
put a Shuguang 12AX7 in the phase inverter slot
this is a cheap chinese tube produced initially for peavy and marshall
it is a 110% output overdrive tube.

a 6L6? all the purists that I know, stay away from Russian made tubes, that being said, buzz indicates a filter capacitor went bad in conjunction

dane
russian made tubes are the best now.
tungsols being pretty much top shelf.
his amp dose not use 6l'6's
and who besides the russians make tubes?
the chinese that's it.
unless you're fool enough to throw your money away in the vintage tube market.

your really passing off info that's over 25 yrs old

+1 for Tung Sol
I went all tung sol in the preamp, and am I'm going to retune the power section with them.

I've always looked at 12AX&'s and !@AU7's as console radio audio amp tubes from desktop AM radios?.. but nonetheless, I prolly have some 12AX7 tubes around and could get my tube tester out and check them for you?

I am looking to get a punchy bottom end and note definition when playing chords. Distortion is not that important. This amp will get plenty of that. I MUST have a crystal clear clean channel NO breakup NADA! I think I am there. The thing that has me so perplexed is you think you have it untill you get to a gig in a BIG room only to find out YOU DON'T HAVE IT LOL!

i suppose if you want to put tubes in your amp that are over 30 yrs old that's your affair.
they might sound good, for about 20 min
then they will be trash
but I'm willing to bet good money they won't sound good at all.
cause they are spent

then do this

buy
2 genelex gold lions
1 for V1
1 for the phase inverter
buy 2 genelex el84's
and use tungsol 12ax7 for any remaining slots

throw away your celestions and buy ev12L's

your clean channel will be the best clean you have ever heard out of it.
and the overdrive will depend how you set up the drive chain in your effects

yea right,
if any of that was true
you would have sold all that crap at record prices 5 yrs ago when the tube market hit it's peak, and most consumers bought into all that hype about new old stock
and a tube tester won't tell you squat about sound quality.
now take all that hogwash over to ebay and see if you can give the stuff away
which you can't.

JCP61, why are you being so testy?.. I know the tube market is down, and I'm hoarding every tube that ain't an old TV tube I find at events, and know damn well I won't be selling tubes on eBay for quite some time.. I got out of selling tubes over 5 years ago.. I keep up with buying and selling trends prolly as well as you, if not better, since I make my living doing it..

I've gotten a lot of good usable, even some great, tubes out of amp chassis of old organs from the 1960's, that people give away for free on craigslist. Got a very nice sounding NOS 12AU7A RCA "clear-top" at a yard sale for a few dollars.
I think you should take JCP61 up on that bet!
