Peg Lautny wrote:Well, I'm always working on my right hand. (Alright all you pervy old guys--let's just leave that one alone shall we?) LOL. To be more specific--I mean things like alternating pizz, slap, thumb with palm muting, etc.

I'm also working on John Coltrane's "Giant Steps" and different ways of navigating those changes and soloing over them. Whew, that song just kicks me in the butt! Every day I pick a few standards from the Real Book to play through and to try to memorize. Oh yeah, and sight reading is something I try to work on at least a little bit with every practice session.

Oh, and tone is another thing....when people are nice enough to compliment me on my sound I always try to be gracious, muster a big smile, and give them a hearty "thanks", but I'm rarely if ever happy with my tone. As they say "It's the journey, not getting there".

Welcome to guitarist purgatory . . . it's only hell if you get no sound at all.

1) Going into television production, after having been away from it about 20 years. Not sure how much time I can give to it, but about a week every other month is my guess.

2) Helping a major star of Poland break into the USA, and working on his project

3) Looking for the right songs and producer for my next album. It needs to be the best I've ever done.

4) Organizing events for an international prayer ministry network.

5) Organizing a "collective" indie label with friends of mine and booking tours across the country for them.

6) Need to study and learn 2 or 3 languages - Polish, German, Spanish, Hebrew. Been saying that since 2006 though.

7) Learning to play chess well enough to beat my 11-year old son. Fat chance.

Other than that...not really sure how I'll spend my time?

WHat on Earth could you possibly get out producing television? (Unless its a closed circuit network for a church?)

Very interesting. Wonder if you could post a sample of his work, would love to hear it

I dunno YOD, Had you considered the option of less than the best you ever done? ;) and BTW... Is 7 day production pushing it? I mean, why would you drag it out that long? LOL! ;)

4) Organizing events for an international prayer ministry network.

Gonna need a boat load of cookies and coffee for that one.

If I wasnt such a wussie, I'd sign up...but alas, I dont know any jewish music... But I did stay at a holiday Inn express once...! :D

a friend asked me to drop some stuff into his techno/ambient/electro jazz tunes.

http://soundcloud.com/lazlo-kovaks/with ... -featuring

i gave him some very rough overdubbed trks for his tune "Within You"....a cpl ac gtr trks, vibes, fretless and then he mish-moshed, cross faded, cut and pasted, and did all that other "remix stuff".

i'm gonna try to find some other tunes of his that have a little more going on chord wise. there's only so long i can keep a static Dmin/Dmaj HALFWAY interesting!

I've had an apprentice/student, for a year, whose goal was to be able to play a whole set of my original songs.
He's been playing for over 20 years, and so that really 'kept me on my game.'
We were meeting for 2 - 7 hours a week, and he was doing great.
He just moved to Turkey; dunno if he's coming back (he might be getting married, there).
Now it's a month later, and I've go more time to practice/compose brand new songs again.
So I think I'll be going back into a recording phase, again.
I have a lot of old, crappy recordings that I'd like to record good.
. . . kinda looking forward to it . . .

Well, I've been trying to broaden my horizons by working on my guitar chops and trying to get some arco (bowing) skills together on acoustic bass. Those long tones are the hardest! Most days I think I should just stick to my trusty FENDER Jazz Bass and then there are those days that I wonder about that too!

I got rid of the covers i had up on my profile page to make room (who wants to hear covers anyway) and put up a couple of new songs.

http://www.bandmix.com/peg-lautny/

One with some simple arco bass and a couple of rough acoustic guitar parts called "On The Wane" and another called " 'A' Bass Boogie" after a friend asked me to record something with me "throwing down" on bass. haha. I'm really not much into that whole "look at me" mindset so after I recorded it, I told her "well, this isn't so much me throwing down as it is throwing up!" LOL

On The Wane is very delightful. You have a good sense of feel and nuance in your phrasings... You're gonna go places if you keep this up. ;) The Arc bow is understated... My ears tell me that it should come forward...and in keeping with jazz articulation, perhaps an arpeggio in there on occasion? 8)

I've been tweaking the mixes of the 13 songs I've got so far for my next CD - I've discarded 2 at this point, and may discard 1 or 2 more of these 13.
Just when I think I've got the mixes where I like them, I'll burn them all to CD and listen to them in my favorite listening room - my truck - and find something needs additional tweaking. Somehow the stick-click count-offs to one song went missing on the latest mix, now how the hell did that happen?

Last night pulled out lyrics to 3 songs that have been languishing, and sat at the piano pounding the keys for an hour. Sometimes that works, sometimes I reinvent a song I've already written.

Shelf them, never discard of delete no matter how bad you think they may have come out..

That material is always useful at another time.

Thanks for listening and the encouraging words PaperDog! I recorded those acoustic guitar parts first and so when it came time to mess around with adding some bass that's all i heard without getting too busy and stepping on their toes!
