Hello friends, Jimmy said my version of Europa "sucks ass" personally I disagree but then I am biased so I need a little help here! Don't worry my feelings will NOT be hurt!

Jimmy http://www.myspace.com/ruimusik

Jeff http://www.bandmix.com/j-haley/

Let the voting begin!

I think you both did good covers!

But Jimmy gets my vote for having the more Santana like tone, especially the wah wah.

Jeff, if you were using a wah pedal ... I would recommend getting a new one.

Both versions are pretty good, but ...

Jeff's production is much cleaner. Note for note, the solo has more precise resonance and I heard the nuance of the passion more profoundly

This is not to say that Jimmy's version lacked passion, Jimmy definately had it there...But, the difference was that his note for note solo was saturated in the reverb /depth, thus the subtler elements of that song got buried.

I did like the acoustic guitar track in Jimmy's version better than I like the keyboard track in Jeff's

All in All I's say they were equally comparable... But in the end... I voted for Jeff, cause he's not a socialist. LOL!

I thought competitive guitar was left in the 80's ...

but..

Here's my feedback

Tone: Jeff's is better. Cleaner. Jimmy- too much distortion, saturation. The reverb is fine, but the saturation is resonating in the reverb, and making it sound sloppy. I'd recommend switching to a good OD and not use a DS for this type of solo.

Technique: Jimmy's is better, as I felt his note accentuation was slightly better, but note they were both really good and it was a close call.

Backing track: Jimmy again, the backing is cleaner and sets a better vibe.
I don't know the original version of this song at all, so I have no idea which track more closely duplicates the original, but both tracks in this case were profoundly different, so I had to choose based on first impressions.

Summary: really it's a pretty even matchup. Neither is perfect and both are fairly well done.

So why the competition?

No competition I just want to prove a point! Jimmy said my version "sucks ass" I don't think that is true! I fully expect to lose this competion if you want to call it that because I knew politics and bias would play the major role here. Do I think Jimmy is a better guitar player of course not! My answer to that question is "we are pretty even in skill level". The better player would be the guy that put the most effort and work into a particular song. That is just my opinion of course.

Music is not a competition Jeff, and the only reason I said that was that you said mine sucked first lol. No one here is taking anything we say to each other too seriously so calm down. You did a fine job on your version so relax.

well the notes were almost identical but not quite
jimmy's was better
it was more expressive not so stiff.

and see'n hows it's a cover I will break my rules and comment on the production

just one:
jimmy's over all production was better as well.

can't allow the fact that jimmy is a card carrying communist to affect my judgment here

but the communists often produce high quality musicians, athletes and ballet dancers
what'cha gonna do?

Thanks JC, I think??

Some info on my version: I recorded the acoustic part first, my friend Bill did the percussion, I played the bass and then layered on the guitar track. Yes I think the tone is a little too processed but it's what I was using at the time (Boss SE 50). I go back and forth between analog and digital effects; analog sound better but digital are more convenient.

My Boss BR1180 hard disk recorder has Boss's COSM modeler. all the sounds in my recordings come from that. As you said digital is more convenient.

i see it this way

analog is miles better
digital is almost noiseless
and we all end up running from line noise
esp the listener

Jimmy are you turning a new leaf? In the past you have been taking things too SERIOUSLY! You are entitled to your beliefs as am I. When you try to censor my opinions your going to run into a brick wall! I am not going to change who I am for you or anyone. I have been shaped by the world and events in my life. REAL experiences. As I have said on occasion you have your reality and I have mine. You don't rag on me and I won't rag on you Deal? This election and politics has divided the people of this country. We both feel like there is a lot to lose if the other candidate wins. Which ever one wins I HOPE it will be good for the country.

I'm on my phone and I can't get Jimmy's version to play. I did listen to Jeff's version. My band does this song with saxophone as the main lead instrument. We do it slower with more stops in it. Jeff's version technically very good but lacking soul IMO. I also couldn't hear the bass well and drumming is the same throughout. More variance with bass and drums, slow the song down a little, put some dramatic stops in it, create something soulful. Maybe someday we'll record our version and put it on here. Of course Jeff's in a rock band, and he's going to interpret it differently than a blues band.
