Have you looked at Seagull acoustics? Made in Canada. I don't really like the 'unfinished wood' look of them myself, but they sound good. Take a look at the high end Takamines and also Wechters.
If I had the bucks, I'd go for a Taylor, love how they sound plugged in.
I always say don't be so concerned about the name on the headstock, instead judge by the build quality and sound.

Unfortunately, my budget for guitars is limited. My new acoustic-electric is a Fender CD-140SCE, solid spruce top, lam sides and back, Fishman electronics. I compared it with everything else available in the price range (sub $400) and liked the sound best from it. Close 2nd was the Epi AJ220. I loved the look and neck (just like my Tele) on the Fender Sonoran, but everything I read said the necks warped on them after a year or so.
My old Epi (73) - have no idea what that's worth now, and my 12 string is an inexpensive Ibanez.

Fender Strat. I like them so much that I have seven of them since I gave one away to a friend.

I have a couple SG's, some Les Pauls, big archtop "F" hole guitars, a Goya classical, and a few others. I also have a Polyphonic Memory Moog that is fun. Way fun. But I have yet to record anything with it.

I prefer my Strats for finger pickin since the pickups are so clean. ( I play with the cleanest sound I can get.

I would like to have a good flat top for some stuff, but the ones that sound the way I like a flat top to sound are WAY too pricey for the little time I would spend playing them. :)

Hey Mike, I have a Seagull 12-string, solid cedar, I believe it's a mid-80's model. Love the tone although it doesn't have a pickup onboard and the sound is not real 'big'. I also have a black Takamine 12-string, it's got a big sound and onboard electronics but it's a little harder to play than the Seagull. The problem is I play very few 12-string tunes. I just need a better 6-string, the Ibanez is good, nice tone but the sound is not real big either.

just pull the "octaves" off one of those 12 strings, jimmy. problem solved!

my first gtr was an old Madeira (Guild's off brand) A-12. Big Dreadnaut 12 string...man that was a nice gtr. from time to time i'd string it as a 6. yep, that's one on the ol' "got away and wish i had it back" list.

Actually I tried that PG, it works but the strings are spaced slightly more than a 6-string to accomodate the octave strings so it's not ideal. Also as I said there's no pickup or tuner onboard so it's not very practical for live playing.

gotcha. pretty much for me..there's no such thing as a too wide fingerboard. funny since my digits aren't particularly long or portly.

say...i'm selling an old De'Armond sound hole pickup w the thumbwheel volume knob. http://columbiamo.craigslist.org/msg/3358850637.html

i've got in my '36 Martin 0-17 and i never play that gtr amplified anymore so i'm looking to turn it into some funds for new toys (read: PARIS SWING gypsy jazz gtr).

i think you need it!

I've got a couple of those De'Armond pickups, I'm spoiled by having the pickup on board with the tuner and EQ!

Woah, a '37 Martin? How much is she worth? Any issues? My D-28 was in the shop almost as much as it was in my hands.

yeah, she's a honey. i picked her up for $225 cos the back had seperated from the side along the lower bout...no biggie and easy repair. it's the little all mahogany job that leon redbone plays. cpl of pics in that link above. it's a great fingerpicker. they don't go for the stupid money a lot of the other pre-war Martins fetch. i'd guess book value is prolly between $1500 and 2K.

you know...this gal Val Goodrich that i play w in our Val & Mal duo uses a mid priced BREEDLOVE...i believe it's one of the ATLAS models that go for around 6 or 7 hundred. it's a KILLER gtr. HUUUUGE acoustic wallop, excellent build quality and it's amplified tone is stellar....a literal perfect snapshot of it's acoustic tone only louder. that'd be one to look into i'd say.

Nice! A collector would snatch that right up.

When in doubt about a guitar brand, electric or acoustic, default to Yamaha.
Go mid price range and you can't go wrong.

Very wise advice, indeed.

I needed a bass to replace the one that got stolen from me recently, so I was looking around.

I played a Yamaha bass that I thought was a nice player and sounded reasonable, a RBX170EW.

I looked on CL and lo and behold, I just got one for 50$ and it not only plays well, it sounds good too.

Yamaha is not junk, oddly enough. I always seem to have a little bit of Yamaha equipment here and there.

Welcome to the forum Peg. This is certainly a pit of crusty old vipers but the venom is weak. Some jewels of wisdom can be found here if you are patient and willing to weed through the flotsam. I enjoyed listening to your music and it reminded me of the Jazz period I went through a while back. Don't be a stranger.

My current weapon of choice is a Seagull S6+ acoustic/electric. I have owned and gigged with this guitar for 12 years and this year has been mostly acoustic gigs in small combos and intimate settings allowing others to lead and sing while I just focus on 6 little strings. Last year I was full steam ahead doing classic rock at larger venues and would not have predicted this turn of events. Music happens.

I also have a handful of electric guitars from Gibson and Fender with a 2003 Tele being a current favorite. She just sings with a marvelous voice.
