well, you're talking about marketing and products and what appeals to us as consumers. i was referring to making sweeping judgements about people based on their race, ethnicity, or gender.

but i gotta disagree w ya bro. studies? yeah there's a gazillion "studies" out there showing this, that, and the other geared towards whatever you want to present..however you want to present it.

i'm sure there are "studies" that show jews are cheap.... black people are shiftless.... blondes are bimbos...and any and every other stereotype you want to include in that list. but that proves what?

i've known people who make those kind of judgements because those stereotypes are out there... "well, yeah...i knew this jewish kid in third grade and he was kinda stingy...yeah i guess all jews are cheap!" .....THAT's the kind of easy way out generalizing that i consider lazy thinking.

"yeah, i used to have a girlfriend w blonde hair....she wasn't the sharpest knife in the drawer" .....therefore ALL blondes are dumb.

Actually mark, there are no studies of that kind. I mean, you wont fond any papers written about jewish cheapmess Or Blonde Dumbness.

But There is plenty of evidence to suggest the prevalence of Ethnocentricity, which is known to breed stereotype thinking. BTW, I once met a blonde with an IQ of 168... But she still fell for the ol "Can you get me a cable for my wireless pc please" trick
:P

I dont think its realistic to assert we ALL are lazy thinkers. Its human nature to categorize and pigeon hole others...Its sometime the only way we can make sense of the world around us. The though- police concern themselves with how we think, when maybe they should focus on how we behave. I could believe all day long that Blondes are dumb... But that does'nt matter until I effectively interact with a blonde and insullt her intelligence. (so far, that hasnt happened yet )...LOL just kidding .. I really love to joke about the blondes caus e I know one and I always tease her...She gets her digs in too though...

Do you really think that marketers 'DONT" use stero typical campaigning to push their products. Have you ever stopped to wonder why Anheuser Budweiser is pushed to blue collar? Cause the presumption is that Blue Collar "cant' appreciate champaign, or refinements of the higher life. In fact, its presumed that they cant identify with anything beyond NFL football.

Look at Miller Beer, outright lie to people by trying to ass off Miller beer as "Highlife" What a joke! If you have ever been in the circle of wealth, you wouldnt touch that swill.

If You buy a Fender Strotocaster, you will be just like SRV or EC.

If You Buy Ludwig, youre another Ringo Starr.

If you buy Hush Puppies, youre one of the casual beatiful people

I could go on...

Is it any wonder that our Kids grow up with twisted Ideas about segments of people?

I drank Miller lite for many years...not realizing that I was missing out on the more refined wines, such as Boone's Farm and Ripple... Of course I needed no free cork screws or bottle openers...They always came with the handy twist off caps :)

I think that these marketing campaigns, no trivial matter when you look at the amount of money spent on psychological research for affecting peoples thoughts, values and presumptions for advertising purposes, have very deep and profound accumulative effects on social perceptions that go far beyond the particular items being advertised.

I think it's applegranates.

You know JC, that is actually sad.
This is the way it goes,,, We used to talk about a bunch of stuff including music. Even this guy Stringdancer came back and tried to post music oriented stuff.

Lately,,, we have had a few posters that have started with nothing more than insults and more insults. Even Jimmy Danger had a cease fire agreement with a few of us if we stopped talking politics. He went right back to spouting his liberal it is O.K. to steal if it is done within the LAW.

What is sad is that planet guy and vinny immediately resort to personal insults. I CAN PLAY THAT GAME, and even better not take it personally.

What is sad is that it makes us all look like jerks. Lets have fun.

Sorry JC.

When you talk politics, you need something to wipe your ass with after, because the sh*t always goes everywhere.

And there isn't any TP/Leaves/Rags or even newspaper 'round here.

So ya'll do the "sit -n- stink". lol
