Paper Im with you, age makes us realize our mortality.

My grandfather died a little past midnite, new years eve of 2009-2010.

There was a tax change that went into effect after midnite, if he had died 15 minutes earlier we would have owed 2.4 million to the government, his holding out like he did, made the bill $900,000!

Its a fleecing of the wealth that our parents and grandparents, and us have accumulated over a life time. They talk about energy and other things, but this really hits hard to me.

1) Increased the benefit period for unemployment insurance. I lost my job in November 2008; I was unemployed until May 2009. I received unemployment compensation for the entire period, and even though it's not much, it helped me get by until I got my new job. Thanks Mr. President!

Is that really Obama's work? I know guys that got similar assistance back when Bush 1 was in office.

2) Passed healthcare reform. Even though I did not benefhand it from this directly, I do know what it is like to pay COBRA to maintain insurance and it ain't cheap. Thanks Mr. President!

I can tell you first hand that the reform bill missed the mark. But I can also concede that Obama was on board with addressing Medicare Fraud Waste and Abuse. To his credit, he launched a couple of initiatives behind the scenes. But beyond that, the reform bill doesn't cut the mustard. Aspirin still costs 60 dollars a pill at most hospitals. You will pay for that through any an all health coverage premiums you take on.

3) Waived the appraisal requirement for homeowners who wanted to refinance their mortgage. Even though I had a lot of equity in my house, my wife's house was underwater (she owed more than the house was worth). We were able to refinance it and go from a 30 year 6.9% mortgage to a 15 year 4% mortgage. This will save us thousands. Thanks Mr. President!

Any other president would have been force to do the same thing. The entire industry was upside down, the bottom fell out and barney Franks walked away unscathed (Which is where Obama failed miserably, by not holding people accountable. And its hard to hold people accountable when you sleep with the DOJ and all the other agencies sleeping with them. Sorry dude, OBAMA is an EPIC FAIL. He didn't do you any favors, whatsoever. But if you sleep better at night thinking he did....

I can understand if none of these policies helped you, but they did help thousands of your fellow countrymen. The least I can do is defend his policies and vote for him, which is exactly what I intend to do.

Just a waste of a vote.

WOOOWW. Almost unreal. Your grandfather was from a different time when a man had a reasonable chance to accumulate wealth.

I bet he was a very interesting man, and I would have to bet he did more good for people than any government could.

Thanks for the story. WOW!

Glenny I hate to insert this is in this thread but my grandfather

John S Wilder Sr, was Lt Gov of Tn for 36 years, you can look him up, its said he was the longest serving person on his level in the free world.

Yes he was very interesting, to say the least.

My favorite was that he liked to refer to the Cosmos for guidance and right and wrong.

Anyway, thats just a side note, I guess it reveals that I do have a very political background, helped with many many campaigns and such thru the years.

I think he was a good one, but then I may be biased.

Haley when I raced dirt bikes I used to come down to TX to race, some of the guys I raced with saw some news about my granddad and how long he served, they asked me are you the Gov of Tn or something!

I said yeah, but I love to come down and kick some TX ass, and I did! LOL! After that they would call me Tn or Governor! LOL!

I can remember our family getting death threats cause my granddad marched with the blacks during school de-segregation in the late 60s.

He had a much thicker skin than I do, cause no matter what he did, someone didnt like it and the local press just ate him alive, I would say how do you handle that, he would just say that he was doing what he thought was right for the majority of the people in his district, he must have known something to last as long as he did in politics.

He was a democrat, but he supported bi-partisanship, even put may Republicans on important committees at the state level, I asked him many times why, he would just say, this persons background quailifys them more than a Democratic for that position.

The thing that hurt him the most, was the closing of some small airports in his district for development purposes, during the 60s and 70s he championed small airports for major towns in his district, to bring in manufacturing type jobs. Many of these got shut down thru the years, it just burned him alive cause he was an avid aviator, flew his own plane til he was 82. Often 2-3 times a day, his landing strip went over my drive way, I miss hearing "Jaybird" taking off and landing.

He also rode bicycles into his 80s, he would ride around 12-16 miles in the morning and afternoon, his last couple of years he had a indoor bike he rode, but he said he preferred being outside and riding. They put these rumble strips on the edge of the highways in our area and it drove him nuts trying to ride his bike, of course the smart ass side of me would always say if there is any man in TN that can get them eliminated Im sure you can do it! He would get quiet when I said that.

These little fees add up.

which is the point. It's never about the "issue" (excuse) used to raise the taxes/fees/tolls/license/penalty or whatever you want to call legal theft.

What gets me is how some still think that the government taking money away from anyone is a good thing. Do they honestly believe that when business is robbed by government in the form of more taxes, that it will help someone besides a politician or government employee??? Sucker!!!

I always knew there was something noble about you, JW. Your grandfather was a great man.

thumbs up!

John, I have been looking for this thread for 2 days now. I couldn't remember which thread you had talked about your Grandfather! You know your Grandpa was a member of "the greatest generation" when Men were REAL Men! I would say he is famous throughout this country because I have heard and read much about him over the years! I know about the passion folks can have about flying. I remember when I was 8 years old my father telling me one day I am going to learn to fly! He started taking flying lessons in 1975 shortly after getting his license he bought a Cessna 172. A few years later he earned his instrument rated license and LOVED to fly. I have pics of me flying with him and him letting me steer the plane!

That is exactly what is wrong about this whole country and has also been about most of the rest of the world. I think your Father wanted you to understand a bit more than just passion.

He also showed you FREEDOM. The stuff that so many people are afraid of.

I don't understand it, can't figure it out,,,,

You stated one very poignant thing,,,, Men used to be real men. Men were not afraid to live even if it pushed them to the point of dying. BUT THEY LIVED TREMENDOUSLY!
