Yes, yes by all means try comedy, lord knows music ain't yer thang if you consider that music.

I gave up wanking long ago, now I just make love to my guitar. My fans appreciate it because it's all about them, not me.

Nothing personal, notice I said "if" and did not name names. But seriously, I've seen so many bands that play that style, and they usually draw about ten people, including girlfriends. Music MUST be about the people who are listening, not the people who are playing.

Planetguy, now why did I expect that type of response? I pretty much use a standard tuning F B E A D G B E depending. Sometimes I drop down a half step. I put up a couple of rough samples on my page that I'm sure you won't like but knock yourself out.

I thought they sounded great. (8 string test 1, 2)
they were way too short
whats up with that?

a punk who is decrying musical masturbation????
or any masturbation?
are you sure you're a punker?

must be because you recognize and bow to my vastly superior music tastes.

do you mean F# on the low one? if you in fact do mean "F"....why "F"?

well, obviously you can play and have chops, but you're right...it's not my cup of meat. i need a little more groove and melody to get my ankles hard ....but obviously those are very relative and subjective, both.

I'm not sure how being 'punk' has anything to do with it. As you probably know, punk began as a movement against overly-complex, overly orchestrated music. Am I sure I'm a punk? No not really, I consider myself well-rounded musically, punk just happens to be the style I've had the most success with. I also have a classic rock band that is doing a wide variety of music and I'm having a blast. So go practice your modes and scales, I'm sure somebody out there wants to hear it. Just not me.

Thanks JCP!

Planetguy, Daaaaamitt, I only type with two fingers and one of them can't even spell . Yes F# is correct. I do play with other tunings sometimes. I'm not so closed minded and I love all music and there isn't a genre or style I haven't recorded. What do you want to hear next?

Jimmy, you know I love ya like the great, great..........great grandfather I never had but you are so wrong. Major record labels don't sign people like him or bands in these genres if they can't bring in the crowds or they can't sell the goods.

ok, i've been thinking about it wondering what (besides MY interpretation of what grooves and what don't) bugs me about that style and here's the other thing.....the faceless and generic gtr tone (again...MY opinion).

everytime i hear anyone playing that style it always sounds like the same generic overdriven, overcompressed, and over processed gtr tone.

i mean, no doubt folks playing that style do spend a lot of time and give consideration picking out their equipment...their amps, gtrs...etc. but i hear that gtr tone and to my ears i have no idea what kind of gtr i'm listening to. it might be a LP, a tele, a strat, some hockey stick headstock shredder w shark fin inlays. who could ever tell? sorry....but i don't see the point in spending any time selecting equipment if it all sounds the same.

so, what am i missing? i mean...besides big love for "brutal" gtr playing?

Planetguy, a lot of that sound has a bunch to do with Active humbuckers.
Plus, you are right. They generally compress the sh*t out of the guitars.

all that purest talk about guitar tones is just that, talk
overdrive guitar has a thousand more colors in it than your typical jazz guitar.
if any jazz player ventures outside of that stagnant pond, they are rejected by the purists.

which is why mainstream jazz is a stagnant pond.
and stagnant ponds smell and are boring.
and yes all the guitars sound the same.
in blue grass all the guitars sound the same.

Thanks you for making my point. Record labels aren't signing bands, period, let alone metal bands. Everyone is DIY now, even big groups that used to be on labels. Yes I've been around the block a few times, but that also means I've seen a lot of things come and go. Metal will never die but it's on the ropes. There are only a couple of venues for it here, and they suck. And the music itself is a far cry from what metal was even a few years ago. The cookie monster vocals and screaming, the over-processed guitars, the double bass blast beats and stupid breakdowns - you cannot say that it's gone in a good direction. Black Sabbath invented the genre and no one's ever been able to top them. Talk about stagnant.
