Irish Anthony,

Im probably a lot more old school than you are, but I feel that when you say "you must do something" Ive still got enough rebel in me to say thats not necessarily so. Just your opinion.

I cant say I would go buy or see these guys, I just think its interesting to see. I think its cool for a group to really get into what they are doing even if they suck.

For myself, I think maybe I should push some boundaries every now and then in order to feel alive.

Im sure the first guy to fuzz up a guitar sound was chastised cause "you dont do that on records, you get a clean guitar sound". Im sure glad somebody somewhere didnt listen to that advice. I dont think innovations in anything come from following any certain rules. They come from pushing the envelope.

Just my 2 cents, which I know isnt worth mush!

i can see the point your trying to make jw123 and as i said i was speaking only for "myself" and my rules towards playing live which most pro players stick too and its not a case of "rules are for fools" its just the way it is,for example try playing a song in "G"and try playing a harmonica in the key of "A" or any another key but "G" and let me know how it sounds..you should understand then...square peg round hole etc.

and i think your confusing innovation with style over content.it has long been said that "dave davies" from the kinks was the first guitar player to create the fuzz sound by taking a razor blade to the cone of his amp to make what we call distortion..listen to "you really got me" for example.thats innovation, he still played the same chords he just altered the sound.

and as for your statement that.."I think its cool for a group to really get into what they are doing even if they suck" im sorry amigo but there is so much wrong with that statement that i dont even know where to start to address it.i have nothing aginst having fun when you play(i love it) but if the musicians are having more fun than the crowed something is very very wrong...i play first for the crowed and second for myself(it used to be the other way around untill i got signed) when people are payin hard earned cash for a show its up to the performer to deliver the goods its that simple..if you dont deliver(for whatever reason) your in the wrong business.

J.W.,
I seem to remember reading about the "first guy to fuzz up a guitar " in Robert Palmer's "Deep Blues". It could have been Ike Turner (R.I.P.)
Anyways, the story went something like this. Ike's band was on their way to the legendary "Sun Studio" to record the classic "Rocket 88". On the way, they got hassaled by the police, who made them unload all their instruments (which thay had lashed to the top of their car). The cops, not having any real reason to detain the forlorn minstrals, finally told them they could "be on their way". After hastily reloading the gear to the top of the car,the guitar amp fell off! When they finally arived at the recording session, they discovered that the speaker cone had been damaged. Sam Phillips told them to use it anyway, and ,as the legend goes, THAT'S WHERE DISTORTION COMES FROM!

good story howlinj and im sure its true but i read in the kinks bio(true or untrue you just never know) that dave was the first to try and "create" a distortion sound as apposed to it happening by accident(to ike) but who knows, if it never happened we wouldnt have metal, punk or any other flat out balls to the wall type of heavy guitar..thank god it happened.

^ i heard Dave of the kinks cut his speakers with a Razor to get distortion. Maybe I read that in the liner notes of "The Kinks Kronikles". I would think Ike's story predates Daves. Great story!

It's also been said that guitarest "Link Wray" intentionally poked holes in his speakers to get "THE SOUND".

Dave Davis always sounds good with or without "fuzz".

your preaching to the choir here howlinj..i love daves playing and even his singing "the death of a clown" is a fantastic piece of song writing but he cant hold a candle to his big brother "ray" i rate him as one of the most prolific song writers ever..i think he knocks spots off john lennon or jagger or many of the other greats of the day.

i was lucky enough to see them playing there last ever tour at the national boxing stadum in dublin about 13 years ago and it was an education, they played all there old songs but they sounded so much better than the recorded originals due to the fact of better(digital) sound and equipment...and anyone who has seen ray do his "bottle balancing" act will know what im talking about...the kinks had it all, great players, great attitude and great songs.its impossible to find fault with them, they will rock your world and do it all with a smile on there faces. :D

dont throw stuff at me....

...i...really...dont...mind this much. id be curious to hear the studio version.

its sloppy, for sure, and i dont know what they are going for. the video itself looks like play time for a room full of toddlers who got into the sugar.

but its entertaining. i remember the first time(s) i heard Zeppelin-- i thought it was the worst crap imagineable.

Too many pedals, megawatt amplifiers and PA's, too many different tones and frequencies, and NO IDEA HOW TO CONTROL ANY OF IT. I've seen it time and again where people are so into effects that THEY FORGET HOW TO PLAY MUSIC. They play stuff SO FUC*KING LOUD YOU CAN'T UNDERSTAND THE VOCALS. Everyone's New Year's resolution should be QUIT MAKING NOISE AND START MAKING MUSIC. PERIOD

The First and Only G3 concert I attended...WOW It Blew my ears away!!!
I could not hear for a Week!! WALLS of Marshalls and not major was played.
