But this bs of saying you can't play or you can't sing
is bs ( and I'm sure I'm guilty of it). I take my music
seriously and when you talk this bs I'll say anything,
cause I fight to win, I don't fight fair, and I rarely lose.
My Dad told me a long time ago there is no such thing as
a fair fight, when you get them down start kicking in the
face. So when you talk this bs to me I think anything is
open, there is no fair fight. It's like the kid who was going
to stab me at work, I picked up my 28oz estwing and smashed
his hand , he said you broke my hand, and I replyed why'll
I hit him in the shoulder I aim to kill him.

So don't just come off with this tired bs of you can't play I take it
personally, and I don't fight fair. This is something our country
should practice, fight to win.

Throw me off the forum I don't care I'm not hiding from anyone,
and nobody's hiding from me. Be warned I will no longer pull
any punches with you internet badasses.

music is purely subjective. One man's symphony is another man's headache. Best to ignore insults if you fell victim to one. I hate my voice, but I like to sing so I do. Along those lines, if anyone doesn't like the music, they can choose not to listen to it. In the end, those who haven't heard your music, can (and will) judge you as a person based solely on how you react in public to insult. Water off a ducks back is the simplest way to deal with critique.

ya know what...as musicians we all have a lot of our self worth wrapped up in our music and how it's perceived/received by others. as much as we'd love to hear that everyone digs it....it just ain't never gonna happen.

sometimes people will give less than glowing reviews because they genuinely ain't smitten w what they hear. and sometimes people put down other's music or skills as just another way to give somebody sheet.

for better or worse BandMixItUp is a site that has plenty of little petty border wars, pissing contests, and folks ready to throw down at the drop of a semi colon.

so, who it's coming from and the context...that's something to take into acct when someone criticizes your skills.

Lynard, I was reading an article in the Houston chronicle and the person giving the review Joey Guerra gave a scathing review on Steely Dan! I couldn't believe what I was reading. The dude doesn't like Steely Dan? Turns out the little turd giving the review was pissed cause they didn't sound like Nirvana, that is BRILLIANT music in his mind! My point in this is it doesn't matter how good you are someone, somewhere is not going to like your music. Like the song says "you can't please everyone so you got to please yourself" If they don't like your music Phuk'em!

We are all, I think, happiest when we are playing exactly what we want to play and doing it well. Be it original, cover, tribute whatever. We are never satisified that we are good enough.

A rule of thumb for songwriters: when the songs are writing themselves grab it. Beat you wife, drown your cat - whatever it takes to put the time in. It seems like songs are out there waiting for us to grab them - but they are not static. Let that song come out and take hold of it while it's there - it might not be later.

And if everybody in the world hates your music - ultimately, so what? I tend to either like bands, not like them but respect them (Rush for me), or dislike them because they actually suck objectively. I apply the same rule to my own stuff and sometimes it hurts.

The key is putting your songs together and playing them and finding that if YOU like them. It's a gift from God. (in my opinion)

Everyone I know, cares to some degree, what others think of their music. Musicians are in some ways the toughest critics on each other.

It does indeed hurt, to be torn up in a critique...But...Therein lies the rub... If one asks a professional his/her opinion, that person should understand the value of even the most rigid response from that professional.

When were busy trying to solve a musical problem, we tend to be less concerned about what others are thinking...because we're too absorbed in leading our own work (which is as it should be) ... to obtain the thing in the song that compelled us to write it. (At least its that way for me.)

My own music has undeniably moved my girlfriend to tears. One of my songs resonates so clearly and precisely to her that its turned her to mush...
When I think about that, its the only 'glowing review" I would ever really need...

There are some songs of mine that roll off of certain listeners backs, and the songs are simply lost on them. I dont hold that against them...Such is the universe of varied tastes.

One thing I think we SHOULD ALL avoid doing is using that ultimate "low blow" you know that hit straight to the groin when you are fighting with someone. You say "your music sucks" or your (insert instrument here) playing sucks. I have been as guilty as anyone on this site for saying stuff like that and it is REALLY JUVENILE!

. What are you talking about? Your thread says "constructive critiques welcome". Constructive critiques of what? Presently you don't have any music up on your profile page. I'd be happy to give a listen and critique but I have no idea what you want me to listen to.

Paper everyone on here sucked at one time or another, its just a progression.

I have no idea what Lynards thread is about, no new music and asking for a listen, Lynard you been drinking again?

Fighting is fine, fighting for what you believe in is fine, but just throwing up something like this to start a fight is a dumbass move on your part.

What about the guys you are playing with? How is that going? Post some of that stuff so we can check it out.

On a side note, if you believe in what your doing, if you believe in what you are playing, then it doesnt make one difference whether someone says you suck or not, I get told I suck all the time, its just motivation to do what I do better. I think Im finally at an age, and have enough self worth and self esteem that it doesnt make me feel one way or another. If you are a mature person then it wont make you want to fight someone, just because they say you suck.

Anyway enough of this childish sh*t, Lynard grow up and play your freakin guitar, thats all the matters that you enjoy what your doing, whether anyone else likes it or not.

That is a very Healthy perspective. As artists. we owe each other the truth about those things which matter. In an ideal world, If I am told that I suck, Its important to me that the critique includes specific points about how or why I suck...and then it should offer solution

Of course I always plead the fifth, and I just assume that I suck...That way, all the bases are covered

It's all subjective, some like this and some like that.

Grow a thick skin and do what you want to do.
If they don't like your music, maybe they don't like that genre at all.
