I have a Fender G-Dec prac amp that sounds pretty good. Lots of presents so you can be as clean or dirty as you want.

However, get anything like some serious volume going on it and the speak doesn't cut it.

for small amps I have to agree that Linie 6 owns that space.

'A Micro' -

Get a real amp that can produce the tones you want, don't bother with another guitar or any pedals at this point. What's your budget?

I think that the Fender Mustang III for $299.00 is a killer amp for clean sound with its 100 watt output and 12" Celestion speaker. It has multiple FX and simulated amps that really do sound like the amps it models.

I have a friend who runs a very productive recording studio as well as playing live. He has used a Line 6 2X12" for years. Now he prefers to use the Mustang III for most gigs and he also uses it on a good deal of his recordings.

He brought it over when he got it to show the amp to me. It really was a lot of amplifier for the money in a lightweight small package. Go to a music store and give it a try.

My friend actually has one of those! But he plays mostly metal though so I've never gotten to hear it clean.

for clean gtr tones (and dirty ones too) i use my '65 FENDER Deluxe Reissue or my FENDER Blues Deville (2x12 version).

since neither of those come in at your $400 budget you might wanna check out the ROLAND Cube 80XL. they go for $399.

i have the Cube 60 (very similar..now discontinued) and it's a great little amp for a solid state. besides gtr (elec, acoustic-el, nylon string) i use it to amplify my vibes and i've even used it for low volume bass situations (upright sounds GREAT thru it).

I'll definitely look at one. I THINK they have one at my town's music store, but I could be mistaken.

Two samples on my page, Latin Blues and Texas Boogie were recorded with the Line 6 Spider and a cheap radio shack mic. Here's and old vid. of me using the Line 6.

The Mustang series are pretty nice. I use the big one - the standalone head and am quite satisfied. Mine is Mustang V but there are four other ones in various configurations and I think from the II up they are good enough for gigs, depending upon your musical style.

Got a Mustand II for a friend and checked out the various models and I have to agree with the posters who suggested the III. Good kit.

Line 6 Spider IV 75 is $299 + you need the foot pedal controller (Express is $99) - with a 12" Celestion, this amp is loud enough to cut through practices with a drummer, bass player on a big Ampeg plus 2 othe guitarists.
If you sign up with Guitar Center's email spam, you will often see 10 or 15% off or $30 coupon deals.
The Spider IV 120 is 2x12" but at $399 normal sell price, doesn't leave you anything for a foot pedal controller (you really need one because it lets you update software, download tones, etc).
