The last time I was involved in brewing beer, it was a scotch ale.
My buddy said, "it calls for 1 bag of barley". He put in 4 bags. WRONG!!!!!

It came out very strong and nasty tasting. I figure it was about 13-14% easily. I drank (3) 12oz. and passed out for 3 hours in front of the TV.

We figured we'd nitro-press it to make it creamy and take it to the frat.
(they drink anything)

Well, all we did was knock out the whole frat with that nasty ale and there was still a half a keg left over afterwards, which we poured out in the AM.

I can still remember that hangover. owwwwwww. ugnnhh. owwwww.

Cisco only drinks Guinness. Before he goes anywhere, I have to check and make sure they have Guinness. If not, he'll buy his own and sneak it in.

It's funny a thread highlighting musical snobbery and seeing a discussion on beer. Ha ha! All you have to do is live in Germany or Switzerland and you'd come back not wanting to touch any of the main beers here. Ha ha!

I don't drink.

As far as music, I hear techno get a lot of flack because it's electronic. This is my main genre outside of rock and I can tell people right now that "soundpainting" is very difficult and you almost have to approach music like a scientist when it comes to recording it, and you have to have the right equipment.

Just the drums alone has so many layers and effects on them, as well as other samples. It can be quite overwhelming when you start recording it and never done it before.

Over the years, I've had a number of mainly electric and accoustic players try to infiltrate the market for money and record "techno" CDs and you can hear how "empty" their recordings sound because they're approaching everything from recording general music. They don't think of the sounds that aren't in the forefront that are used to boost the higher frequencies and the low frequencies to fill in the "space" of a song. There's also the use of white noise.

Of course, these tricks are done accoustically, as well with layered guitars and other instruments in regular accoustic music and so on, but it's much more intense in electronic music. The reason electronic music gets such a bad rap too is because you often have too many goofy, simple lyrics that sort of just kill it for people. But they aren't trying to change the world, their intent is to get people on the dance floor and the vocals and simplistic lyrics are just seen as another "instrument."

Chaeya, your post reminded me of an article about "loudness wars" in recorded music. The article I read is long gone (written in 2001 I think), but there's many others that sum it up quite nicely if you google it.

If you already know this stuff just ignore me :) If you don't, it's an incredible read on dynamics and why music is kinda shi*ty for the last 15 years.

i don't recall if it was from a movie, an interview, a story i heard...or possibly even a band i once played but i recall a deal where someone in whatever band it was became increasingly annoyed w everyone getting louder and louder. when he could take it no longer he turned to his bandmates and asked "OK, IS EVERYONE NOW SATISFIED THAT YOU ARE THE LOUDEST?"

Haha- Naw.. the "loudness wars" terminology would lead you to believe it's about bands being louder, but it's not.

It's about the use of dynamic compression in digital recording to maximize the entire sonic spectrum so there's zero "dead air" and it commands attention more than analog music, but it also causes an incredible amount of ear fatigue, which is why it's hard to listen to newer music in any length.. you get three songs in and you don't know WHY you don't want to hear any more, but you just don't... and you would instantly assume it's because you don't like the music. Who wouldn't?

Think about it- (if you are old enough), remember back in the day when you could listen to an entire album or cassette (analog recording) and love it. Now.. not so much. Even bands I LOVE today, I get ear fatigue trying to listen to them at any length. Yet, I can put an old cassette in the deck at home and let it rip and love it- I just listened to WASP, the last command in it's entirety on cassette last week.. LOL, no ear fatigue. Once you know it well, you recognize it quickly

Anyways.. that's the summary version, go look it up if that seems interesting.

I checked it out, since I'm somewhat new to the recording game. In part, I do agree, but I don't admit that music is getting shittier, but I will say that it hasn't really progressed beyond the 90s. The 90s produced some very eclectic artists. However, the main reason I can't play a CD the entire way through is not due to over-compression, but mostly due to just plain boring songs or people who can't stick to the theme of their CD, where one songs sounds really groovy and funky, and the next song is just lame WTF! - I find a lot of alternative bands like to do this to where you just want to shake these gits half of the time.

I have a few artists where I can put their CD on and listen to it all the way through a few times over. And also, many indie artists can't afford the state of the art producers, studios, or mastering to where they can even pull this off.

It's interesting though.

ear fatigue, Did someone say something? LOL!

Im with Keith, I prefer analog dynamics to digital.

I also drink Miller Lite Beer, Why you might ask? Is it less filling? Taste?

Why hell no, when I met my wife its what she drank, so I figured I will simplify this. Just drink the same thing, plus brownie points! LOL!

lol Jw, my mother swears by Miller Lite and she actually gets drunk from it.

(If it's cold, it's not bad at all. Very much like Amstel Light, no biggie.)

Bellhaven. Not the scotch all, the regular one..

I like Shepard's Neame as well.
That's my hands down fav.

Tastes like water and gets you faced quickly.

I could drink that all night or until I pass out and fall on my face.
