Ignore him planetguy, I understand what most of what you are saying. I've been playing 11 months, not 11 days. I know SOME things, but not even close to all.

The only thing that I dont understand all that well is the term Arpeggios. I've tried looking for an explanation on the internet, but all of the stuff they say IS way over my head. Is there an easy, straight foward example that you could give me?

i'll be glad to offer an explanation but maybe it'd fun to first let Glenda offer up an explanation of what arpeggios are.

an arpeggio is basically the building blocks of a chord....some would say it IS the chord.

when you strum an open G Major chord from the low E string you're playing these notes... G B D G B G so... G B D are the pitches that make up G Maj chord.

these are the notes in a G Maj scale G A B C D E F#

now let's assign a number to each of those pitches like so:

G=1
A=2
B=3
C=4
D=5
E=6
F#=7

so in other words...G is the 1st note of the scale...A is the 2nd...etc

chords and most western harmony is built on thirds. meaning to build up a chord you play every OTHER note

going back to that G Maj chord....we said it's pitches are G (1st) B (3rd) and D (5th). notice that you skipped a note between each.

if you go down and build a chord/arp up from 'A' and do that same "skip a note bit"....you get the notes of an Amin chord A (1st) C (3rd) E (5th)

go down one more note and build a chord/arp off the B note skipping every other note again..that yields a Bm chord... B (1st) D (3rd) F# (5th)

you can and should do this for all the notes within the G Maj scale and they will yield the rest of the chords/arps that are avail within G Maj.

these different chords/arps are also referred to as modes.

hope that's not too confusing. and i'm sure there are others who might explain it more clearly and concisely.
