Ok, so my friend catches me with a YELLOW Boss SD-1 last night and can't understand what I use it for. I came to find out that no one there knew what it's for.

To me, there is one 1 known use for it.

For 1000 points and control of the boards, does anyone know what the preferable use is for this pedal in question>? (all stock, no mods)

lol Yes it's a distortion unit. Most everyone I know hate em and I would too if I didn't figure out how it's valuable.

HINT: It's not very adjustable and it doesn't do much unless it's used in a specific manner.

There is one very specific situation where it rocks the mfing house.
When do you use it and for what?

I used mine to get a good blues sound. I would use it with the clean channel on my amp with the strat and I would get a good SRV sound?

Ok enough of this..

The Boss SD-1 is the yellow super overdrive and that is the only pedal I am talking about at this time.

If you ever had one you will notice it is a PUSS.
It's barely adjustable, sounds like mud and really doesn't do much in general. That should tell you something right there.

I got invited to a jam session a while ago. I was in over my head, but that's a different story. The point is, while I was there I noticed a guy using a Marshall 2203 head with the boss sd-1.

His tone was really good. I asked him at the end, what the story was and he imparted a little wisdom on me.

"If you use that pedal which in conjunction with an overly loud or uncontrollable amp, you get a situation where you can better color the sound to something akin to a brown sound without going deaf".

It will still be loud as balls, but you can get a better tone using this pedal in conjunction with your loud ass amp and overall it just plain sounds better.

If you take that same amp and try to use a more conventional distortion unit, it becomes overkill and not preferable.

And you have to try this to believe what you get out of it.

Take any amp you consider "too loud" and use this pedal with it.
Marshall heads in general love this pedal and to date I haven't seen a pedal that even comes close. (retch)(sad isn't it?)

I have no idea if this extends to newer Marshall gear but I would be inclined to guess this is not the case.

It's a very simple way to get a classic rock tone, simply and a good one at that !

I used those for 20 years and I really liked them. I actually owned 3 of them one after the other! Never any complaints. Now I own a BB preamp made by Xotic effects and a 78 Badass distortion! Oh and I still have a Boss super overdrive. Just not using it now. If I had room on my board you can bet it would be on there!

Try it, you might like it.

It really only good for an amp that has no master volume and has issues with tone vs volume.

If you have one, you know what I mean.

If you don't, you won't.

The 2203 has a master volume, but it does something a little bit different for that head. More than that, you'll have to experiment a little should you have one lying around collecting dust.

I should add, it's a CLASSIC ROCK tone.
