Guthrie is technically amazing but that is not his best work IMO. Too shouty. It's like going on a date with a woman who talks too much. Needs more theme, melody and phrasing. To quote G.G. "If you must play fast, at least play something interesting." Words to live by when playing the blues.

I agree he is technically gifted. I checked out his funk and other blues videos. And thats super true! I hate when some rock solos focus on speed and gimmick more than phrasing and melodic value. Some of my favorite solos are slow and simple, yet I can't recreate them.

There you have it. From the earliest blues recordings of Son House and Lead Belly, through the jazz infused Billie H, to modern pyrotechnics of Guthrie Govan. So cuddle up with youtube for a while and learn a few. Come back here and post a few samples on your profile page so we can check out your progress. Gotta keep the blues alive.

Thanks! I'm actually hoping to incorporate some into my reggae playing but that'll be after I learn a few riffs and master the 12 bar etc etc. expect a song up in about two months

Thejohnny7band wrote:The Blues is a bit like Backgammon. It takes a few minutes to learn and a lifetime to master. From my perspective it is less about technique and more about having a deep, emotional conversation with your audience. The best Blues players are the ones who know how to use the space between the notes. Listen to the greats: BB King, SRV, early Peter Green, Buddy Guy, Muddy Waters, Bo Diddley and many others. You'll get the idea.
Couldn't say it much better, except you CAN'T scientifically play the blues. Sure you can play all the blues progressions/chords, etc. Don't get frustrated if you don't ever master it. Few have.

Why master what someone else created when you can make your own creation or at the very least use things from what they made to help create your own style?

Early reggae absorbed a lot of influence from 50's and 60's American r&b and soul music, so it is not too unusual to hear a bit of a blues influence in some reggae. http://youtu.be/c4v8kgw-HlU

The tune sounded really bluesy. This is different from what I was thinking but I like it anyways!

you can certainly be the master of your own blues.
when people say that you can't master the blues "it's a feeling"
what they are realy say'n is that they can't imitate well enough the player they admire.

but there are hordes of blues masters

the question is, will the listener understand what your crying about.

Jimi Hendrix, Now there is a guy, I wouldn't mind being even 3/4 as good as. Because if you're 3/4 as good as him, you're STILL one of the best ever.

shredding is retarded in my book, but some guitarists think it is kosher
