Kramerguy wrote:Hey everyone.

Yeah, I said I was never coming back  It's been what, about 2-3 years?

So let me re-introduce myself by first apologizing for my behavior in the past. I was in a dark place for quite a while in my life and the political and religious threads in this forum had gotten to me. I'm not really trying to make excuses, more than to just explain myself.

After leaving, I tried to wash my hands of those discussions, and still had some difficulties, but eventually discovered my issues were that I was miserable in my job, my marriage, and even my bands, and just life in general. I still have strong beliefs but mostly keep them to myself, and after some practice, learned how to discuss and debate things in a friendly manner vs. arguing and berating.

Since I've been gone, I've moved on to a fantastic job (could still pay better tho!), my band situation has improved greatly, and my marriage has been better than it ever was. We're married 11+ years now, and have been together over 15. I've been involved in charities, I bike, hike, and eat better- lost 40 pounds 2 months ago, and am probably happier than I've been in more than 20 years. :) My wife tells me that this job changed my life (work for a natural foods company), and I think she's right.

I sincerely apologize to anyone here if I've personally offended you in the past.

So, all that being said....

Wazzzzzzup!?

Congratulations on your happiness that's awesome news! I am happy for you! So tell us about your band situation are you guys playing out? 8)

Pretty cool video Paleopete!

Thanks Kramer, I'm pretty sure you can tell we had a lot of fun doing it, especially at the end, but I've never been completely satisfied with it. I wanted to do the first (strat) lead over again, but we had already been at it around 7 hours, I didn't want to subject the guys to too much burning of the midnight oil, so I left it, even if it was a bit weak. Otherwise, a couple of minor vocal glitches, mainly because I didn't warm up my voice enough, everything else is pretty good.

Talked to Shane last night, we're putting together a list of songs to work on later for both recording and stage, we're all itching to play again, and it's looking like a pretty impressive list already. We played together for around 4 years, got to the point we knew what everybody was going to do before they did it, so we were pretty tight. Well, except for me, I always try to be unpredictable...lol...But we were starting to work on much tougher songs than most local bar bands will even think about...we had the vocal and musical ability to pull it off, so...

Things like

Renegade - Styx
Fat Bottom Girls - Queen

we had both of those well under way and a half dozen others on the list when I left Texas, after I've been there 6 months, no telling what we'll be ready to tackle. When we did the benefit for our late band leader we hadn't played or even seen each other in almost 10 years, 2 songs and it was like we never quit...

So I'm really looking forward to it, I know what we can do already, these guys are ready to go, and we have better equipment now. It'll be a couple of months, but I'm pretty sure we'll be doing some excellent stuff. I'm tempted to post some of the things we're considering, but I don't want to let the cat out off the bag just yet. But you can bet Southern Cross will be on the list, Sultans of Swing, several Eagles tunes, Melissa...we've done those for years already. And those are the easy ones...We're also talking about working on Last Train, my original that's unfinished, on my profile. Probably going to rename it too, I've never been happy with that name. But it needs a ton of work, I have a half dozen other parts figured out, with no instrumentation right now to put it all together. Keyboards, flute, banjo if I can get my hands on one, maybe mandolin or sax, bass, guitar, drums more keys...

It drives me crazy, the parts are in my head, and I don't have the instruments to put it together...

Hey J!

Things are going really great with the bands- My cover band has plateaued , we're getting the best bar gigs and money now, we no longer play for any doors. We could probably climb up a notch into the club scene, but none of us really want that, we're pretty much happy right where we are, and are considered among the top bar / cover bands in the area. We have a stunning press kit, table tents, a marketing department at my fingertips and we use a QR code people can scan with their smart phones to download our free app that basically shows our next gig, pics, schedule, and contact info for booking. It's pretty sweet (done thru conduit.com if you wanted to know)

I still ocasionally play with the female singer/songwriter- we did a few huge festivals, including Musikfest recently- that was friggin awesome. She's back in school right now and focused on getting a degree, so the music is more on the sidelines- it's actually refreshing since we were both burning out for a while, and the break allowed us to take a fresh look at the music and we are talking about whole new approaches to really make it more refined.

I'm playing regularly with another cover-band as a fill-in, my involvement with the band is minimal and that works fine for me lol.. let someone else worry about marketing, booking, all that stuff.. I'm just there to play, have fun, and make some extra money.

I still do other fill-ins, but I've recently been taking a step back from it, as I'm finding more and more bands that shouldn't be playing out.. are. I used to take the approach of it's a job, take the $$ and do it, but lately some of the bands I've played with are just so damn unrehearsed and undisciplined ... and the communication tends to suck as well. The last two jobs I was asked to do- One I told them no after one rehearsal with them and the other I told them no after communication problems amongst themselves became evident.

I'm still doing some studio work, but not as much. Mostly the studios are feeling the same recession the bands are feeling. There's a lot of competition for the studio slots which has driven down the pay. I've given up more work than taken this year simply because the distances make the $$ just not worth it. I still find this part of music to be my favorite, I really like a lot of the producers I've worked with any most of the artists have been top notch. I've gotten tons better at writing guitar lines with solo artists and have a good feel for reading them and finding what they want. I wish I could do it full time lol.

I also found myself in one situation where the artist just wasn't good enough to make an album, but had the $$, so what does the studio or producer care? I did the job, but was so unhappy with the final product that I actually asked not to be given any playing or writing credits on it har har.

While it seems like I'm up to a lot, it's really not that much, for all the work I'm doing, I no longer find myself putting in tons of hours like I used to, I guess most of the ground work is done and things are running on auto-pilot, for lack of a better way to put it. My wife still puts up with me out doing music stuff all the time, so that's good 8)

What you been up to?

Kramer, I have been basically playing in 2 bands one I am a substitute player, let them worry about everything (like you) and I just play. I am trying to keep a professional attitude keeping in mind this band is for the $ and convenience because the gigs are usually early 7 to 10 and not far of a commute also I get to play a lot of lead. The other band is a bigger production and everything is VERY structured. This band requires some travel We played a gig in Vegas back in January. I hope to record some originals in the fall and winter in my little home studio as I have a TON of ideas. Both the bands I am playing in are cover bands so the originals will be me playing and singing all parts.

Pretty cool! I heard Vegas is a TUFF place to get hooked into regular gigs with, you travel all the way from TX to there?

Kramer, they flew us out there and rented p.a. and back line for us from a sound company. They paid us pretty good so I took the money they paid bought a ticket for my wife and we went up a few days early and did the Tourist thing. I treated it like an all expenses paid vacation! It is a MAJOR building supply company that sponsers a convention there! We play all their functions and to a certain degree they sponser us. They even flew Terry Bradshaw in as secret guest speaker I was about a foot away from him as he took the stage during our break!
