Depends on how you look at what you are doing. E of course is the root note in key of E and primary note of the E triad. If you do a 1-4-5 starting in E you are playing in key of E hence E is the root.

But we all jump through various hoops, on guitar using power chords than relate to major or minor keys; on bass using all kinds of accidentals to keep the thing rolling.

I practice fundamentals all the time and I'm still dumb. There is so muich to know and understand. Ain't it great?

All this talk about chords... May as well be talking about a map... :D

If 'E' is Grand Central Station, then when we round a corner, and go up some stairs, through a door, into an elevator, and back down to the underground tunnel... Then...when we get there...what chord would that be?

If we want to head north from E, but want to stop for coffee just up the street... what chord would that be?

If during our traverse, we see a broken fire hydrant spraying water and we want to get sprayed. When we reach it...what chord would it be?.

Each artist will give you a different answer, respectively. However, one thing is consistent, The variations on each root/dominant reference (note) in conjunction with the variation of musical gesture (ie rythms, meters) will tell the listener a reasonably vivid story.

We say there are rules about musical sequence per se...That is , there are rules that define the scales. I say hogwash...The definition is an attempt to express what really prevails, which is the need for sustainable, musical continuity,. That is is why scales exists ad are referenced. Each position is identifiable and can thus be exploited.

Therefore, When we speak of chords, we speak of lil red flags in a map-quest called a song. When I Write.. I always suffer the same barrage of questions..."Where am I?, where am I headed"

 :? 8) :P  :P  :P

That's pretty cool actually.

People come up with zany little comparisons to simplify so many things in life- I think the map approach is brilliant!

Just keep running your mouth off about your vast

Well most pro groups will say somethimg like its a I V VI VII

My money don't talk it just sits in the bank or is

Well you sure didn't prove anything to me, and I

Have a good day Mr Freud

Dude.. seriously.. At first I was having fun with it, I don't really take anything that seriously, but in a single topic, you've shown me that you:

* Think you know everything, or at least more than most
* Are extremely condescending
* Unnecessarily combative
* Use 3nd grade level insults, mostly focused on turds.
* Continously quote cherry-picked tidbits of theory and repeat them over and over as if nobody ever heard of I IV V before, in what I can only guess in an attempt to show off your stunning knowledge of what might be the most boring and worn out chord progression of all time.
* hold anyone in contempt that doesn't agree with you and take a lapdog position at your feet.
* Can't debate anything in a calm or rational manner, much less a friendly one.
* Will escalate any topic into a royal pissing match at the first sign of disagreement.
* Are presumptive- you assume an awful lot and react based entirely on assumptions.

I don't claim to be an expert at anything. I get great gigs and studio work for reasons that you wouldn't understand. You think I'm full of sh*t, and that's fine. I've already proven myself to the industry, this community, and most importantly: regionally. I'm sought after for my ability to play, my reliability, and that I do what's best for a song, not wank and show off like so many others.

In my original posts to this thread, I took into account that there's a lot of self-taught and non-theory people here, and I made my points simple and understandable. If you don't like it, well.. just don't like it. If you didn't agree with my points, then by all means, have a debate and discuss it, counter the points with your opinions- But all you did was come out the gate and insult my level of music education, without really understanding what level I am at. Learn how to discuss and debate.. not insult and barrage. This is a forum for ALL LEVELS of musicianship, not a bunch of egomaniac guitar theory gods.

Get a hold of yourself.

This is my last post in response to your crap, It's not fun anymore toying with your infantile bullshit. I will respond to discussion relevant to the topic.

Ahhhhh, hurt your little feelings huh punk.

Judge me anyway you want, doesn't make
it true. Most of its in how you took it, your
another internet badass, I'm scared, and I
ain't scared of nothing. You want to call me
names well I'm your huckleberry, anyday.
That's all you can do is call me names, and
make judgements, I ain't skeered.

LOL, whenever Ive done little sessions they just say it goes like this, never got a chart of anything.

Its funny cause I never even think in theory terms, or notations, I just play, hopefully Im in key.

Lee, on a side note, Kramer is a very accomplished musician, he can hold his own with you or anyone on this site. You could probably learn a lot from him, I know thru the years Ive learned things from him, but then Im just a hack guitar player anyway.

That's usually what I do too. I got my start in the world's least organized jam band, so I learned to think on my feet pretty fast.

Some of my basslines would be a lot less interesting if I actually had a clue what I was doing.

This music thread is far more refreshing than that political crap where everyone starts arguing and insulting one another. :) :)

Actually, the only thing wrong with music today is that it belongs to a younger generation. It's just like the time our parents asked the same question at one time or another. The more things change the more they stay the same.

Correction, Slacker... The music doesn't belong to the new youth...In fact, the Music seems to have gotten lost from the hands of the new youth.

I don't really know what the new youth possesses , but they are calling it music. :(

Thanks John,
