and I don't even care....

I just had a chat with my girlfriend's' 22 year old daughter about the concept of taxes.

She staunchly believes the following:

1) People who earn more money, should pay more taxes. (She doesn't understand why you 'need' more than enough money to get by ).

2) She believes its okay for Starbucks to put out a Tip jar and expect tips. She does not recognize that merely stepping into the place to buy a coffee is actually doing them a favor. They should be tipped because "they earn less than me"

3) She believes the more money we pump into the government, the better...

This is a girl who smoked the LSAT test and will be attending law school next year. Shes no dummy... but in all honesty, I thought I was talking to a full fledged socialist.

I think there is now a complete breakdown of US fiscal, political and social integrity, such that I'm pretty certain that the U.S., constitution is now sitting on a roller between the Charmin rolls.

If anybody here thinks this is cool, just remember, your music now belongs to me. I don't owe you any payment for it, because technically, you earn more than I do when you sell other copies. If I am not employed, I expect you not only to give me a free copy of your CDs, but also give me my own Ipod to listen to it. You need to make sure I get a pair of Ear-buds for it also.

When I retire, I'm leaving America and going back to the UK...Cause at least over there, when they phuk you in the ass, they do it in cool looking row-houses and they offer tea at 4pm. Plus, I can drown in my overtaxed sorrows over real pints

Sad thing for most young people is that when they run into the reality of expense, our current economy will NOT SUPPORT THEM.

This is only caused by the #1 reason no one wants to face up to.
We have a major increase in world population, world demand, world need.
All of this is fueled by energy.
I have said this before,,,, Unless we push to meet the demands now and start planning far into the future,,,
We are dead men walking.

Say you are a worker and you get a 3% raise this year? Surprise your insurance is going up 15%? Your grocery bill is going up not just because of the drought, but because the current administration is an ecological radical, hates the country and what made it great (he was elected to uphold its constitution) that he believes is just a framework (his SUPER INTELLIGENCE and the dreams of his father were destined by executive order to re-write)

This Cacksucka can't blame BUSH! He HAS BEEN THE PREZ WIT SWAGGA FO 3 YEARS! :P

Wait, you're saying those aren't perfectly reasonable statements?

1) I think it's just common sense that people who earn more should pay more. Just for curiosity, I did some calculations based on the 2012 tax rates, and it seems to me the way they do it now is perfectly reasonable. Say for the sake of argument you're single and earning $85,650 a year. At a 25% marginal tax rate, you come away with $68,208 after taxes, or roughly 80% of your earned income.

So, Basically you support taxing higher against Higher income earners, who fought twice as hard to get there? You believe we should tax them more, simply because they have the brains and skills to 'earn more' ? Dude...Wrong on copious number of levels..! I am an American of certain persuasion. I have never collected a single dime in welfare or comp or any other entitlement (except the GI BIll) Nobody ever 'gave' me a phukin dime. I notice lately, that I have [pretty much forfeited many of my rights to help other Americans in this country get on their feet. I would like those f**k to pay me back, if only in terms of some respect and gratitude. In My humble opiioin, It's really nobody's elses phukin business or right to dictate how much wealth I amass. (Especially if I wasn't breaking laws to obtain it) .

Now, that's proportionally less than if you were single and making $35,350 a year, placing you at the top of the next lowest tax bracket. In that case, you would have a 15% marginal rate and come away with $30,483, or 86% of your earned income. But if you're the first guy making $85,650 a year, your income after taxes is still nearly twice as much as the guy making $35,350 a year's income before taxes!

All this tells me is that I'm twice as smart or skilled as the dumb-ass, who's earning 35K. But, He has just as much of an opportunity to earn 85 k as I do..So I really don't see the rationale here. To those guys , I would say get off their lazy asses and develop themselves into people who are useful to society and bring value to the table. Then get rewarded accordingly.

By the way, note the word "marginal" there. If your salary got raised to $85,651 a year (your boss is so generous!), you wouldn't suddenly be paying 28% on all your income. Rather, you'd pay 10% on the first $8,700, then 15% on everything from there to $35,350, then 25% on everything from there to $85,650, and you'd only pay 28% on that one extra dollar. The math's a pain, but the results are less painful than if you paid 28% on everything.

Basically, it's reasonable for people who earn more money to pay proportionally more in taxes, because even though they're paying a higher percentage of their income, at the end of the day they're still walking away with more money. So the rich stay rich even while paying their fair share -- how's that for having their cake and eating it too?

Are you aware of how much charity the rich provide this nation? You want to know why your kids can Ice skate for free at the Rockefeller Plaza... Its sure aint because of the taxes we paid. The advances in MS or Cancer treatments... (Not from taxes)... You seem pretty good with the math... Tell me, where is my 30% going to? What am I paying for (That is successful) ? Casn somebody at least send me a bottle of the MD 20/20.... I need something to clean my broken down stove.

2) I think you (or she) put it backwards. It's not that baristas should be tipped because they earn less, but that they're paid less because the expectation is they will be tipped. So I also disagree with tip jars at Starbucks, but for a different reason than you do. If I'm paying that much for a cup of coffee, I'd hope more of that money would go to the barista who made it for me than, say, to paying Starbucks executives huge bonuses (in fairness I don't actually know where the money goes). Then they wouldn't need to rely so much on tips. What can I say -- I'm a musician with an English degree, they're probably some broke liberal arts graduate -- we starving artists have to look out for each other!

I tip when a tip is 'earned'.. That's to say, when service recognizes the value of my patronage, and then goes beyond that, to make my experience more than the bare minimum expectation calls for. That's when I tip... And then, I am a very generous tipper who takes into account the low wages they work hard for. But if they believe for one minute that i "owe" this to them,, they can go phuk themselves. As for artists looking out for one another... , sorry I have seen too many mooches, leeches and plain losers , all in the name of music, who expected me and or others to pick up the slack for them ...constantly... These are the same dick-heads that turn around then, and whine about my successes (which is relative term in my case  )

So maybe I'm missing something, but what she said sounds perfectly reasonable to me.

I guess the "militant " portion of her logic might seem fuzzy...

ya know what would solve this problem?

If employers stopped taking taxes out of your paycheck and you had to do it yourself. The first time people made out that check to the IRS, they would understand how taxes are the bane of America.

We revolted against King George for 2% tax and now we're paying upwards of 27% income tax and closer to 50% when you count all tolls, fees, licenses, etc., etc.

Anyone who thinks the government needs MORE tax money isn't paying attention to what they are doing with the tax money they already suck from us.

The Democrats depend on this kind of ignorance and envy to stay in power.

Pretty funny Dog. One of my kids recently finished grad school (Masters in Education) and she may be the most conservative teacher in the state. Her good friend who is in grad school now is very similar to the girl you describe, very bright, high achiever, and leaning socialist.

We had a conversation on the patio one day and she thought high earners DEFINITELY need to pay more taxes. I asked her if she just talked the talk or actually walked the walk... Would she be willing to give 300 points off here extremely high CSAT scores so that a low scoring student (Gina) might have the same opportunities that she has. You know, even the playing field for those less fortunate who weren't born with such a sharp mind or didn't have such a high work ethic as she has. She thought about it for a moment and said:

"No way am I giving up those scores. I sweated over books and study guides for 6 months to get those scores. Gina (who failed the CSAT) was out partying, hanging at the beach, and only studied two weeks before the test. No wonder she didn't make it. I'm keeping my CSAT scores because I earned them!"

I told her I understand completely... And welcome to the Republican party.
