Last night we played at a cool venue (very popular) here in H-town. We had the new light show running all was going great! During the first set the owner called a major booking agent and told him "you have GOT to come see these guy's"! I didn't know he was there but someone kept buying us shots during the second set. After the second set (we do 3 long sets) On our last break I went to get a beer at the bar. I asked the lady who bought us the shots and she mentioned this guys name. I said Wow he was here! Anyway the bass player Randy saw him and said I didn't tell ya'll because I didn't want you to be nervous!

He was buying you shots?
Maybe he wanted to see if you were musicians or alcoholics ?
Maybe it's just me ... but I'd be impressed if the band did not drink till after the performance.
Not intended as a put down by any means but if YOU were looking for someone to invest money in.
How would you respond ??

George, we are a local cover band. He won't invest a dime (only his reputation). He will MAKE money from his percentage of the gig proceeds. If he calls and that hasn't happened yet. Even if he does if the gigs only pay what we are already making we May not use him. It all remains to be seen. I was just highly flattered that a club owner thought that much of us!

All these years I've been gigging if I reported every penny I've earned I would have reported at least ten pennies in expenses. Uncle Sam would have LOST money on me.

That's really great, Jeff...! If he's testing you guys on the drinks, be sure you test him with the "Show me the money" clause in any dialog he strikes up... As I see it, he needs you guys, you don't need him...

That agent was enough of a pro to know that real pros can hold their liquor and was just expressing his appreciation.

At the absolute worse case, you had a good gig and free drinks!

The last show we did the bar owner bought us shots and beers and gave me a fifth of Patron at the end of the night. I'm pretty sure he wasn't testing us to see if we would say no.

We are a cover band and play bars also, I consider it a compliment when someone buys us a round of beers, I dont do shots anymore, but some of my group does, but I cant remember when it hurt our performance.

I think that just goes with the territory of whereever you are playing, George in your situation it would be like getting a love offering, when I played in religious outfits they would pass the plate and do that for us, but ussually they just gave us lemonade of tea, the same thing as getting a beer in a bar to me.

If someone gives you anything it means that they are impressed with you, no matter how you look at it, like I said someone gives me a shot I just pass it on to one of our members who wants it, no biggie to me.

And Haley I can relate, the other night someone was there and asked if they could video tape us for a club owner they knew, I didnt tell them that I had already been contacted by him, and we couldnt come to an agreement on money, cause we would have to travel a little further than usual and maybe have to have enough money to pay for some hotel rooms to do the gig anyway.

What Ive learned business wise in the club business is dont give anythign away, like a cheap or free gig, cause if you do it, then that venue will just assume you will play for that everytime they call. Our band quit doing that a few years ago, if someone really likes you and wants you then they should be able to pay your going rate. So dont sell yourself short in that area, it will come back to haunt you if you arent careful.

On the other hand if a member of my group feels strongely about a benefit type deal then we will particiapate if everyone agrees.

Recently we got asked to do one for this sound guy we know, I just decided I would send an anonymous gift to the guy cause I do like him, and know hes having a rough time, I told our singer I figure I would just cover whatever our audience would deliver anyway, so he was getting more in the end than if we had particiapated in the first place.

But back to the thread, I think that is cool Haley, when a club owner recomends you thats just awesome, should just give your band more cred no matter how you look at it, plus you might ask him if he would be a reference for other venues, when we have a happy club owner I always ask if they would do that for us, and so far noone has turned me down, or bad mouthed us to another club owner.
